    Deepsouth and Horsepower,

What is compassion based on? and how can it be selfless?

You know, your not telling me how compassion is selfless but only that it is selfless. I've explained why it is not.

I have done things you would consider selfless but that doesn't mean it was. I help people when I can because I value human life.

I helped a pregnant woman with a flat tire. I recognized her distress and helped, I saw helping her as a higher value, to me, than going home and watching "Survivor".

Its not human life- you gave something from yourself with asking nothing in return- that is SELFLESS plain and simple- you have Compasion for those that are less fortunate or in need and you give without asking yourself-what do I have to gain from this- Bro- like it or not- (without trying to sound Gay) you my friend (and I'm proud to call you that)are a kind hearted loving, compasionate person who has done things for others selflessly. You have put someone elses needs in front of your own- thats not human nature

My value for other people's well being is of higher value than watching "Survivor". This particular person was approximately 8 months pregnant and uncomfortable; it would have been much more difficult for her to change the tire. If I would have ignored my compassion that was brought about by my value system, i.e. I would have lacked integrity to live by my own beliefs.

Your turn. I like it when people disagree with me but you have to at lease attempt to explain why? Where is your line that separates where selfishness ends and selflessness begins and what determines the line? and how is your compassion selfless, if it is based on your value system?

                    RIGHT!!
and his compasion=sefless acts of kindness toward fellow man.
a very good trait in a true follower of god.
you may not like to think of yourself as a follower bro, but you are. and your the best kind, imo. you dont do it out of fear of hell. you dont do it for you own selfish want of heaven....no! you do it out of you love for human life. your compassion for others...you try to mask it as anything but selflessness or compassion...and thats what makes it selfless AND compasionate!!! in the end....it may be you that has to get me in!!!

I just make it simple. What I take out of an act such as that is the peronal value system. First off, I've never put compassion in a seflish based value system. So I just simply choose, or I believe it's more an understanding, that that act of compassion is based on a correct personal value system which values human life, and even comfort. It would take a lifetime of acts of selfless compassion for me to demonstrate where I draw the line to make my point. It isn't something that can be put in words. Or at least, again, I can't. You choose to view acts based on personal values as selfish.

Let me make it easy. All value systems aren't selfish to begin with. Just because it's within your value system, and it's your values, doesn't make it selfish. You've redefined selfish. Just because whatever act done belongs in your value system, it's selfish to you. That's not so. It's like right or wrong. I can take a selfish person, and define his acts being selfish all day long. Then take a truly unselfish person, and define his acts as unselfish. Just use the definitions given for the terms for help. Then subtract all the irrational, or false rational, that you've added to make compassion a selfish act. voila...unselfish. You can even possess a selfless value system. That's just pure crazy to you though, right?

                              Let me offer another perspective.

I didn't give something of myself. I held myself to my own standards, my own morals, my own values - I was myself. I had integrity and lived by my own value system, which includes valuing other people.

To be selfless, I would have said to myself, "I know I value other people and I hate seeing people in distress but even though I could do something that would take less than 15 minutes to help this person, I'm going to choose to ignore my own higher values and decide to go home and watch t.v.
