  • Being Humble/swallowing pride

Ok. A few months ago a joined a new gym. Really like the place, has a mix of every type of training apparatus and a good mix of clients. I became friendly with the owner who is also a trainer. We talk whenever he's in and one day I began to discuss some of my injuries. He then proceeded to offer a free training session to go over some techniques to help alleviate pain and get the parts of me that aren't working properly back to good functionality. Foam roller, band resistance, different exercises I normally don't do. I was taken aback. here's a guy who barely knows me and goes out of his way to just help. In my head I'm thinking..."I don't need help, I've been doing this a long time, I'm just broken down and there is nothing I can do about it"...My pride just being an ass. After a day of thinking about it, what could it hurt. (I forgot to mention he's a powerlifter as well)

I met him the other morning and we went through a bunch of little thing I overlook, and the stuff I already mentioned. And When we were done I realized...I would have been an idiot not to accept his help and advice.

You can teach an old dog new tricks. So I'm curious if anyone has come across this situation and just said, "whatever bro". We always seek advice here so I couldn't understand why I had an issue getting it from someone in the gym...just me being an ignoramus.

I feel that we always need to remain "open' to others suggestions and don't ever get the feeling of " I know it all". Not saying this is how you feel . There are always new things coming out daily and there may be something we do not know. Be open, listen, take it in and see if something new works for you. Everyday is a day to learn something new in life. It may be big or it may be small, it may not even be something we can apply to ourselves but something that might help another. that's my philosophy!

I get this way especially when it's something I think I'm good at. I have learned a lot of "life lessons" the hard way so I am much more open to help and giving help then I used to be but I still get a bit full of myself. Good post Zoot.

my first instinct when someone asks for or offers help is usually to brush them off, but my second instinct is to help and accept help. i'm still working on doing the 2nd instinct more than the first.

I dont have a problem trying something new and listening to someone. I just hate when someone asks for my help then doesnt want to listen to what I have to say, they should have just not asked.

lol, I hear ya that is my life in a nutshell. I have learned to just not put a whole lot into advising anymore and if I do, I go about it in a different way. the best is when people have asked for advice form me only to hear years later "did you know what this or that does?". when "that' was exactly what I said to them in the first place, lol.

I try to be open for new ideas and ways to do things. I'm always surprised at the knowledge that some people have. It's funny how many times I got the best advice from the last person I thought would have any knowledge on the subject lol.
