  • Gym prices?

How much do you guys pay to go to the gym, or whatever it is you may do personally, what do you think is a fair price to workout in a gym with free weights, the basic lifting machines and cable machines, cardio equipment, and tanning beds.

I'm curious because sometime this year, if I think it could be worth the money and effort. I will most likely have the opportunity to open my own gym, I have a building available to rent so cheap I would almost rent it just for me to lift in. But I'd like to have ideas of whats fair prices in you guy's minds for membership's, since yall have more experience than anyone else I know about this stuff.

There ae two real gyms here:

One with very old equipment, but has a pool and walking track, various classes/zumbu all that crap. The hours sucks and are all over the place and its hard to get in there for anyone with much to do.

The other has brand new equipment and tanning beds but not enough of it. People wait in line for machines pretty much. Its supposed to be a 24 hour gym, but they find reasons to close for anything, like the employees dont want to work very hard.

If you guys have any kind of ideas or advice, lmk or pm me or anything. I've been thinking about this for a long time and think it could be possible now, with have a building and not much overhead after buying equipment.

    Re: Gym prices?

I pay $77 a month and it has just about everything one could want. Fuzo pays $30, where he goes, and he is pretty particular. It has to have what he is used to or he will go somewhere else. I think if you find a place that has what you need, and isn't oevrcrowded when you go, then it is worth the extra money if it is more. A gym with all the fluff, that you may not even use isnt worth paying extra money for. I say the least you can pay the better, but it has to fit all your needs. Cleanliness is a big factor for me as well as being able to get in and out of there in the amount of time you have to workout. If you have to wait around to do things then that isnt the place to be.

It is a nice clean building, nothing has been used in it before, the two draw backs to it is:

its not huge, idk how many sq. ft. it is, but its big enough for a weight room, cardio room, and make mabye 3-4 tanning rooms.

Its attached to a car shop/mechanic that i am good friends with is why the rent would be so cheap, I feel that may stop some people from going. Sometimes it would be noisy and even thought my side of the building would be good and clean. Some people would freak out about the grease and dirt next door i think.

he isnt going to use it for anything. I would pretty much just pay $100 in rent and power/water bill for the building.

I think you would attract a certain kind of member that would really like that environment. I know Fuzo would love a place like what you are thinking of. I think you should go for it. what were you thinking of charging a month?

Shame on me that I rambled on above, lol. I am in rare form today and will blame it on my migraine.

Oh baby. You didnt ramble lol.

I'd like to charge $30 a month for just the gym, $25 a month for just tanning, or $40 a month for both. Thats cheaper than any gym close to here and people her generally dont make much $$, so that would really appeal to them and the tanning beds alot of girls her would go just for that bc theres not many tanning beds here either.

that sounds like a fair price. Would you do any type of contract or would it be month to month? The lots of tanning babes will be worth it right there, lol

Here people would like it better if it was done month to month. I know they would. Theres not a big economy here, most people just live week to week pay check to pay check. I think it would help them out and make them happier to not be tied to a contract.

I could do the lifting workingout stuff easy on my own, do some personal training and hire a lady to work at the counter and help with the tanning stuff. That seems like a good idea to me, and make women more comfortable that just want the tanning beds. Does that sound like a good idea from a woman's point of view Baby?

Obviously I'd put two bathrooms, mens and a womans. and I'd put a small rooms to change in. I don't think there would be enough room for a full locker room right away, but I could add that on later.

Thank yall for responding. I'll get on again tomorrow and see what else I can think of i may need to ask.

that's exactly what i was thinking myself man. what you can also consider doing is offering up a spouse/family package deal. one of my smaller local gyms cleans house with different membership setups. it looks something like this:

basic (only open during staff hours/cheapest membership)
                      platinum (open 24/7 access/costs a little more)
spouse package( combo of one of the above)
family package (also a combo of above)
military/first responder package (pretty cheap and 24/7)
teachers and city/county workers (a little more but still discounted more than regular)

they also got rid of their tanning facilities due to overhead costs and no profit on keeping them running. they replaced that with more classes and child care services. the child care service is offered for free with platinum package or above packages. for the basic it is additional cost.

the biggest thing you have to work is cornering your end of the market to bring people in. it may be going cheaper or offering some service that other facilities dont have. that will drive in your member base.

I would keep the tanning room area in the front of the gym. Reason being that if you have people that just come in for that, they do not have to go through the whole place to get to it. If it is located in back, it may also deter some ladies from going there for tanning. Women aren't always real comfortable having to go through a place like that if it is mostly full of men, that is unless they are women looking for attention, lol. Anyway, just something to consider imo

                          Re: Gym prices?

I would say also knowing who your target is critical. If you want families then typically you want to have daycare, classes (most females love classes), dont have alot of loud muscled up folks in the gym etc.

If you want hardcore clients then choose what type of hardcore clients you want (powerlifters, bodybuilders, olympic lifters, crossfit, athletes, etc.)

For example if you do crossfit gym then dont expect many bodybuilders as crossfit is all body weight, free weights, and gymnastic movements. Bodybuilders I think you would want free weights and variety of machines.

Powerlifters and olympic lifters I would think primarily free weights with some things like reverse hypers etc. thrown into the mix.

Also if you want to increase membership maybe find the best trainers in the area (best meaning who has tons of clients). Offer them a free place to train (meaning dont take any of there personal training money, as long as they bring in client memberships).

I am sure you can find tons of good info out there on google and in forums of others who have done what you want to do and learn from them.

If I ever opened a gym personally I would rather go after a small niche and keep overhead as low as possible (personal training studio, group class studio, "Box aka crossfit gym, etc.)

Another way to get money is find instructors that are reputable and have a strong following and again offer free membership and no fees if they can bring members in.

the gym the wife and I go to is a 24/7 gym and together our membership is under 55.00 per month..

but they also do some dumb shit at times they try to make more of a club type place instead of a gym.. they will have hooters stop by different times of the year and then certain times of the year they have a DJ in there playing music.. I don't need all of that shit.. play music over the speakers and have clean equipment and a clean place..

28$ a month 3 year contract. 24/7, tanning, lockers, always clean, has two sections new equipment then a back dungeon where I like to be most the time. It's a cool little place. I don't mind the contract cuz it's cheap and I live 8-10 min away. Month to month is like 40$ with tanning and then they have a 1 & 2 year option as well. It gets cheaper longer your contract. They sell supps too which is cool when I get low and don't realize. My last gym was paying 68$ a month at my last gym which pretty much the exact same set up minus the dungeon room lol.
