Re: Started my step son in BJJ

    Will do! Thanks

I've got to post this as well. My highlight for last night was sparring with a blue belt again. We start from the knees, I step around and trap his leg and take him down but into his half guard. I'll make it short....I transitioned from there, to back where I flattened him out for a bit, to mount, and he was pushing upwards with his arm, so I tried to set up an arm bar and got out of position and he obtained side control which led to north south and he choked me. This was after almost 3 minutes of me controlling.

One other big highlight during this session was this....when I got his back and set my hooks, he was in the back defense position (I call it turtled up), he grabbed my arm and tried to roll me over his shoulder. Well I had been reading the Jiu Jitsu University book earlier in the day where it said this was a big no no. Once he committed, he basically pulled my arm under his chin and as we rolled, I sank in the rear naked...almost! Right when I was about to get my non choking arm behind his head, he reached up with two on one and pulled my arm down, so I couldn't get it. SO SO close!!

This makes two weeks in a row that I have almost gotten a tap from a blue belt! I am super excited about this! All I wanted to do last night was work some defense and escapes that I had been studying up on but I couldn't pass up on the opportunities when they were presented.

Like I said though, he ended up tapping me but I still think I did great. Don't take these statements as being "cocky," I am just super excited that I haven't "YET" gotten just completely owned

Jacob got silver in no gi and gold in gi! 2nd event and 2nd win. I'm very proud of him!! I'll post the vid tomorrow.

Everything changes now...he moves to submissions now. He's great on offense but needs a little tightening in the sub defense area. But he won't compete again until November so he has plenty of time

THAT IS AWESOME! tell him we are proud of him too

next time he rolls tell him he has to play defense only. no subs, only reversals or escapes. he defense will get better quickly. the person offending will attack alot as they have nothing to fear even if they are reversed so it works well

Re: Started my step son in BJJ

Here is Jacob's Championship match. He fought this kid in no gi as well and the kid just latched on and stalled for about half the match. The ref wouldn't stand them up and didn't take any points away for the stalling. So their match went to extra time. The kid initiated a TD and Jacob sprawled to defend (he got no points for the defense). Then Jacob took the kid down and got mount (still received no points). The kid stalled again until about 20 seconds left and he got a sweep to beat Jacob. It was screwed up. So we told Jacob to NOT let this kid stall you out once we saw he was facing him in gi as well.

But anyway...here is the video. It's a no submission division...had it been subs, Jacob would have steam rolled this kid!

Re: Started my step son in BJJ

You can even see in this video, once it hits the ground, the other kid would basically grab lapels (or anything he could hold on to) and just hold on. He wouldn't really try sweeps or any transitions. You can't hear it on the video but the ref kept saying he was going to take points away if he kept stalling but he never did.

Also, we didn't worry about Jacob's weight for this one (my fault) so the kids in this division were about 7-8lbs heavier than Jacob. One of the kids in no gi was as tall as I am.

Re: Started my step son in BJJ

i really enjoyed the video. was that you or the coach hollering? i assume you.........

at the start when you were yelling control you were right. he is doing awesome! but he needs to settle down. gain position and then try for mount. work on him getting chest to chest with the guy and sitting out in side control. i have found switching from the sit out to knees back and forth makes a guy think about defending rather than escaping and they make mistakes.

Jacob is going to be really good and that kid he went with was good too.

here is a little trick breaking a good guard. Jacob is obviously strong enough to pull it off. get a sleeve i like their left as it is the weaker hand normally with your right hold it to their belly. take your right knee and lift it to the outside of their left thigh and hip and rotate it in hard. push down on their right knee with your free hand. guard WILL break. smash that leg you are pushing down and duck your hand over the space you made under the left leg and throw it over. drop right down into side control. a quick guy will roll to his knees but you will be on top and the arm in guillotine is right there. low percentage to finish but while he is defending you can set up taking his back as he will turtle up

i know this is unsolicited advice but damn i love seeing a kid doing so well. once he gets that guard pass it will take a long time for guys stop it

Re: Started my step son in BJJ

                Thank you sir!

Yeah, he tends to get excited in the tournaments, but one reason he was like that here is because that kid stalled a lot in no gi. Jacob said he didn't want to give the kid time to grab him and hold him. But he is getting there.

I don't mind the advice at all....bring it on!

I have been working with him on guard passes as well. He just does a few of the key pieces wrong which makes it much tougher on him breaking guard. Now that he is going into submissions, I am going to start really working with him at home on defense.

Re: Started my step son in BJJ

thats good. make him start with another kid already mounted or in side control. make him defend and if he escapes or reverses put him back in that position while the other kid is running subs left and right.

this will get defense good fast

Re: Started my step son in BJJ

Jacob had a surprise BJJ test this past Saturday. His old teacher, his new teacher, and two of the school's black belts were there. All of the kids got tested. But Jacob was a 4 stripe white belt at the time. He tested up to a solid grey belt. For the ones that don't know the kid's colors, he basically tested over one whole bet. So it goes, white up to 4 stripes, then grey white to 4 stripes, then solid grey to 4 stripes, then grey black to 4 stripes, and so on. So he went from a 4 stripe white to a solid grey. I was SUPER proud!!! It was the first time his mom has seen him in class since his first couple of classes. I told her that he is really getting good and that she would be surprised!

He is slick man. His transitions between submissions are so fluid it's ridiculous! He doesn't allow the kids to take a break at all. He is a dang Houdini and taking the back. He just has a few holes that we are working on. I am going to buy some mats for the house and I am going to start concentrating on helping him reach his true potential in BJJ. He is going to be a top player in our area.

He will be a guard player. He LOVES to pull guard because he is so strong with his submissions from guard. I'm thinking that I may put muay thai and boxing on the back burner and see what we can do in BJJ. He gets so fired up talking about it that it fires me up! We will be watching tv and the next thing you know, we have a full blown match going in the living room with the dogs barking at us and all that....haha!

He has his next competition in November. It will be his first time competing with submissions, so we will see how that goes. If he does well, I think I am going to let him do as many comps as he wants.

Sweet brother keep at it!!! He will thank u in te future! The only thing I wish my dad did more was make me stick with sports more and help me get better. Sounds like he's gonna be a real condenser on the mats!
I never meant to be better than anyone, I was just born that way. Its hard being a god amongst peasants!
