I agree. His confidence has really grown the past 8 months. His teacher is great though...really good at teaching the kids about respect as well as the art.
this is the most important part, in IMHO!
I'd go to planet fitness, but I'd hate to set off the Lunk Alarm.
Great idea! i started in boxing when i was younger my only regret is not stocking with it. My parents always where like if you dont wanna go dont go. I kind of wish they pushed me into more sports lol. IF i ever have a son he will be enrolled in MMA as soon as he can walk
I never meant to be better than anyone, I was just born that way. Its hard being a god amongst peasants!
Jacob got his 2nd stripe last night. He is pumped now!
NICE! on fridays i help out at a buddies school just so i can roll with him even though he whoops my ass. he has a few 14-16 year old kids that are beasts.
your son rolling with newbs is good. it teaches him to relax and work with technique rather than strength.

I may end up back in BJJ only. I've been noticing that muay thai and boxing has been causing some pain in my leg and knee where I had surgery. I don't know if BJJ would be easier on the knee or not, but I may have to give it a try and see. If the knee irritation stops, I may just stick to BJJ only. I love muay thai and boxing but not enough to walk around with my knee bothering me all of the time. I'm never going to compete in either of them so it's not that important.
Any opinions on whether BJJ would be easier on the knee?

much less snapping on the knee joint in BJJ but you spend alot of time on your knees with pushing and pulling motions. i wear a cheap compression knee brace on my left knee when doing Muay Thai. it helps but then i have never had surgery on my knee

Yeah, I wear my knee sleeve during class and it does alright in class, but then hurts the next couple of days. I think it's just the bouncing around, in and out, snapping with the kicks, etc...that's getting it. I think being on my knees won't be as bad, but the only way I will know is just to try it. I'm going to give it a try and if my knee pain stays, then I'll just have to bow out as much as I don't really want to. I would like to at least be able to do BJJ because I think that will help my step son get that much better in the future. If I'm not in BJJ learning myself, there will come a point in time where I won't be much help. I would like to be able to have really competitive matches at home when he gets some more size on him.

Alright, so I talked with my trainer the other night and he gave us a smoking deal on the classes. I am going to try and work the knee out without quitting the classes. I did boxing and bJJ the other night with no issues, so maybe it's just taking it's time getting to 100%. As a matter of fact, I am adding classes. I can't resist...he gave me a good "all access" rate which was only 10.00 more than what I was paying. So it looks like I'll be training in Muay thai, boxing, BJJ, and krav maga. The krav maga won't start for another couple of weeks, but I think it will be more of a real life situation self defense class than the others.
I know, I know....lot's of classes but to be honest, I am getting in better shape than I was in the gym lifting. I just love this stuff. I have been training in one thing or another pretty much all of my life but I have always had interruptions that keep me from getting anywhere with it. Not this time....now that my step son has gotten so involved, I am going to see where this road leads. I want to see how good I can get with my old ass....HAHA. I am currently planning on competing in BJJ sometime at the end of this year. It's something that I have always wanted to do but never put the time in to actually get it done.

that's cool brother. i think your knee will acclimate to the rigors of striking. it might take a while. i know alot of guys who have to wear ankle braces when they start kickboxing/Muay Thai and after 7-8 months they don't need it anymore. I wear my knee brace not to help with my movement but to hold my knee together when accepting a leg kick. (helps if you check them LOL too slow)
Your step son is at that age where he learns very fast. he will only get better and get in better shape, his confidence will rise and i feel with a good role model like you his respect and discipline will only improve.

Well, last night I had to roll with a guy that was 282lbs (down from 314 in the past month). Needless to say, it wasn't too much fun as I am only 185lbs. But I did manage to sweep him once and defend the arm bar....he tried for a couple minutes to get it but I had it locked down. He did end up getting me in a kimura, but he was so big I couldn't do much with him.
My second match was with a girl that I hadn't seen in there in a while. She was a 3 stripe white belt. I moved to mount and tapped her with an Ezekiel.
My 3rd match was with a 2 stripe blue belt. He got me in an Americana the first go round. The second time I took him down but he got me in half guard and he had a TIGHT half guard. I tried to get out but couldn't. So I decided to put some pressure on him with the Ezekiel choke (I know, I wasn't in mount but I didn't know a lot to do from there and it was wide open). So my plan was to put the pressure on him there in hopes of his half guard loosening. Once I got it in place, it got tight to my surprise. He tried to block with his chin which started putting pressure on his jaw. All the while I'm trying to get out of half guard but man he had my leg locked down! He tried to sweep a few times with no success. I'm thinking "Man am I really going to tap this 2 stripe blue belt! I was getting excited. His chin popped out and I then had the neck and I was getting anxious....I was also wearing out. He finally swept me and the time was up. But he told me afterwards that had he not swept me that time, he was gonna have to tap!
All in all I think it was a pretty good night for me considering I just started. The big guy was killer though. I almost tapped because I couldn't breathe with him on top.
My step son came with me to the adult class. He usually just sits around and watches what they teach us, but at the end, they usually invite him to roll with them...especially since he has the tournament coming up in a week. But he went with a black belt in the class and the guy was teaching him some things and what not. After they were done, I overheard him talking to the other teacher and he says "Man, that kid is a beast...he's going to be good." That really made me feel good for Jacob!! I can't wait to get some video of him in the competition. His game has changed so much since the last time he competed it's ridiculous. And his confidence in himself and grown significantly which has made him more aggressive with his technique. I've got to get on the ball because in another year, he's going to be hard to handle for anyone that doesn't know what's going on.

big guys are hard to deal with. alot of them think they are better than they are. weight matters. also americana, kimura ect are the easiest subs and alot of guys go to them when they pin a smaller guy down. don't let a tap from one of these discourage you. it just means the guy couldnt pull off an armbar or triangle or a higher level sub. those arm locks are the first subs taught.
young people like your step son advance faster than us old folks. hope he stays with it.

Jacob has his second NAGA this Saturday. We are pretty pumped. I just hope the Jacob that shows up to training, shows up to the tournament. If so, he's going to be tough to beat I think.
