Re: Started my step son in BJJ

I haven't been able to do my Muay Thai this week because my first BJJ class aggravated my knee injury. I've been doing some stretching and foam rolling and got it feeling good enough to do another BJJ class last night. It's a little sore today but not like after the first class, so I think it's just going to take a little time for it to get used to the movements.

BJJ was tough last night. I rolled with a blue belt that was about 2-3 times my size. BUT.....that was the best class I have had! This guy taught me things during the ENTIRE class. Every little thing I did wrong, he corrected me immediately and showed me the correct way and even what my errors could lead to. It was really informative. I mean, I needed a note pad for that one. I am going to try and roll with that guy every time I can even though there is a huge size advantage. It was great man!

I am pumped about the tournament tomorrow. I am going to try and get as much video as I can and I will post up a link.

Re: Started my step son in BJJ

My step son's first BJJ tournament is in the books. It was an all day affair and the NAGA wasn't too bad. It was VERY crowded but pretty well organized. The only slow down that I saw going on was the fighters not being at their designated rings to hear their names called, the fighters' coaches not being at the ring, and the kids not having their gi's on to be ready when called.

        No gi---
This was Jacob's first match in any kind of tournament and he was SUPER nervous. He went out and did his thing but he was no nervous that he couldn't remember basic sweeps and takedowns that we had worked on. He ended up getting a bronze medal though. At some point he fell on his knee wrong and that hurt him for a little while. Luckily, we had about an hour or so wait before the Gi matched started. I talked with him and went over a few things and got him calmed down before the Gi started.

        Gi---
He got bumped up to a different class for his Gi match, I think because he had teammates in his other class and they were trying to keep from so many of them fighting each other. He had weighed in at 88lbs with a max of 89.9, so I think that's why he was chosen to move up. Between Gi and no Gi, I had showed him how to grab the lapel and explained about jerking his opponent down to get him off balance and increase his chances of a takedown. As you will see in the video, he really exxaggerated this move, but it seemed to work. The video was the fight for 1st place and he ended up winning this one 15-0. I was really proud. Jacob has the red tag...he's the really blonde kid. At the vey end, the kid got Jacob down and was going for mount, but that was the end of the match. It ended right before I dropped the camera.

Our team ended up with 4 golds, 4 silvers, and 5 bronze...I think.

Thanks man! In his no gi match, his coach had to coach another student, so I was doing the coaching and was hollering like crazy. I tried to keep quiet in this one since his coach was there...I didn't want him to hear a bunch of different instructions and get confused. I loved the event man! There were some little guys up there that just plain badass! They were maybe 8-10 years old and looked like they had been doing it for 30 years. Really some great talent out there.

there is a kid named drake dudley at the school my boy trained at. he is a monster. he is a kid and a men's purple belt. google him. my son didnt like BJJ much. he loves Muay Thai. keep him in it and maybe he can be like this kid. also get him in wrestling at school. best BJJ guys i know wrestled in highschool and college

as for your knee. use a brace and do rotational exercises. strengthen the joint. also if you run, make sure you use a mid to front foot strike. heel strikes mess up knees and a forward strike strengthens ankles and calves.

Wow!! That kid is awesome! My step son wants to do Muay Thai as well but I can't get him to the class when it is offered. They have it right after school and I live too far away...not to mention I would have to leave work early. So my plan is to just teach him what I know about Muay Thai until I can lobby for another kid's class. He would love wrestling too, but we don't have that in our area. It really sucks too.

What kind of rotational exercises do you think? It's a meniscus issue.

I know!! I was like "please don't start hitting him" haha!! We had to tell him not to rear naked choke the kid because it looked like he was about to lock it in and his division was a no sub division.

i put a light medicine ball between my knees and hold it tight. i then "gyrate" my knees in horizontal circles holding the ball (takes alot of practice at first you will drop the ball, or try a foam block is easier) the circles dont have to be real big. WARM UP GOOD FIRST!

hip rotations puts lateral pressure on the knees and really strengthens them. also good for BJJ. get in the crab walk position belly up, hands and feet on the ground supporting the torso (it aint comfortable) rotate the hips slowly while maintaining balance until the inside knee is at a 45 degree angleand hold, like you are going to slide it under the supporting knee. go easy at first. maybe 8-10 reps at 1/2 the stretch

Re: Started my step son in BJJ

I will be signing him up for another NAGA tournament in the next day or so. The tournament is June 22. He is pumped for this one! I have noticed the last session or two that things that he used to struggle with are now starting to click and he doesn't have to think anymore. He had one of the best matches I've ever seen him have 2 sessions ago. The transitions were just beautiful!

A couple of guys at the gym are trying to talk me into training and competing in a NAGA event in November. I am thinking pretty hard about it. It would be pretty cool for Jacob and me to be able to enter and compete at the BJJ tournaments together. My biggest issue is just time. We live about 45 minutes from training. It has already pretty much taken all of my gym time. And I am going to begin a krav maga class in June which adds 2 more sessions per week. But as long as he is interested in BJJ, it's going to happen.

This is great choice, a respectable martial art like bjj is a great mental and physical builder for anyone of any age, especially young people. Really a great moral supporter.

nice. does he light roll? have his get with a kid who is a higher rank and have your boy work light while the other kid defends "lightly" this way he can go for stuff and work out the mechanics without fear of subs or reversals, also the kid wont shut him down.

i still use this in my game after 8 years and learn something new each time. works great for sparring too.

thats great he is getting in the tourney. my boy did the AGF tourneys. not as big as naga but still a good experience.

I agree. His confidence has really grown the past 8 months. His teacher is great though...really good at teaching the kids about respect as well as the art.

There are 2 specific kids in his class that are REALLY good and I have told him to partner up with them as much as possible. He tries to do that when he can but with him being one of the better kids in class, the teacher pairs him with some of the newer kids to help them learn. He uses that time as time to work on his technique while taking it easy on the newer kids. So he gets both sides of experience as you mentioned. The two really good kids do a great job at helping teaching the others too. They don't just go in there and beat the crap out of them because they can, they will explain what they did wrong and all that.

His biggest problem right now is he doesn't quite understand what it takes to transition or sweep while he is in a mounted position. I work with him at home and he knows how to do it, but as you know, that has a lot to do with timing and he hasn't quite got that down just yet. His biggest asset is his flexibility which gives him an amazing ability to take someone's back. I mean, he makes it look so smooth and easy. I am excited to see where he will be in another year! I need to get back on the mat myself or he will be kicking my butt before long
