If we didn`t bomb Japan we would have invaded it. The plan was for Russia to take the northern half and America to take the southern half. Initial estimates at American casulities 500,000. And who knows how the men and espically women would have fared in the hands of the Russians. If American casulities were to be half a million, how many Japanese would have died?
Using the Atom bomb to end the war in Japan was, in hindsight, one of if not the most humane way to end the war.
The real question is did we need to drop two bombs. That you might debate. The common story that I`ve heard from people who know things is that we dropped the first one to show the Japanese that the war was over. Simply put the new technology could kill YOUR ENTIRE POPLUATION. Time to capitluate with honor.
The second bomb was dropped (according to many) to tell the Russians that we could duplicate this tech and use it if they tried anything in Europe. Bear in mind at this time the Russian military forces in Europe were MASSIVE, way more powerful than the western Allies combined. That plus Stalin was evil so of course he only respected the language of power.
So the question to debate, if you wish do debate it at all is this. If we dropped the first bomb to knock Japan out of the war. Did we have to drop the second one IN JAPAN to educate the Russians? Could we instead have dropped it in the Pacific with Russian observers? THAT is the question.
And one more thing, if the Iraqis were able to bomb the US right now. It would not be terrorism because this "insurgency" we keep hearing about on the news is actually a "war". War is war, and in war people get bombed. Terrorism is a term our media uses to try and downgrade the image of the enemy. Pisses me off. Yeah, their style of war is different - it seems to give us some trouble frankly. The Vietnamese had a different style too, we called that Terrorism too but wat was Vietnam if not a war?
