Defiant N. Korea fires series of missiles

TOKYO - A defiant North Korea test-fired a long-range missile Wednesday that may be capable of reaching America, but it failed seconds after launch. The North also tested five smaller missiles in an exercise the White House called "provocative" but not an immediate threat.

Ignoring stern U.S. and Japanese warnings, the isolated communist nation carried out the audacious tests even as the U.S. celebrated the Fourth of July and launched the space shuttle.

None of the missiles made it as far as Japan, all crashing into the Sea of Japan separating the island from the Korean Peninsula, officials said.

"We do consider it provocative behavior," U.S. National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said.

The tests also drew quick condemnation from Japan and South Korea.

The U.N. Security Council called an emergency meeting for Wednesday morning and Japan said it would introduce a resolution protesting the tests.

"We will take stern measures," said chief Japanese government spokesman Shinzo Abe, adding that economic sanctions were a possibility. He said the launch violated a longstanding moratorium.

South Korea said the launches would further deepen its neighbor's international isolation.

The U.S. administration made it clear that its response would not involve military action as President Bush consulted with Hadley, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld. The State Department said Rice conferred with her counterparts from China, Japan, South Korea and Russia.

"It wasn't that he (the president) was surprised because we've seen this coming for a while," Hadley said. "I think his instinct is that this just shows the defiance of the international community by North Korea."

Hadley said the Unites States is now trying to determine what the communist state was trying to achieve.

"We're just going to have to do our homework, do the analysis and see what we can divine about what they had in mind," he said.

The North has been in a standoff with the West over North Korea's nuclear program. And the rhetoric has grown increasingly strident with the North vowing Monday to respond with an "annihilating" nuclear strike if it is attacked pre-emptively by the United States.

Talks on the issue — held between North Korea, South Korea, China, the United States, Russia and Japan — have been stalled since last year over Pyongyang's insistence that Washington drop financial sanctions against it.

Hadley said the long-range missile was the Taepodong-2, which failed 35 seconds after launch. Experts believe the missile — North Korea's most advanced with a range of up to 9,320 miles — could reach the United States with a light payload.

The State Department said the smaller missiles includes Scuds, which could target South Korea, and Rodongs, which has a range of about 620 miles and could target Japan.

The launch came after weeks of speculation that the North was preparing to test the Taepodong-2 from a site on its northeast coast. U.S. and Japanese officials said six missiles were fired in all, launched over a four-hour period beginning about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday (2:30 p.m. Tuesday EDT).

The North American Aerospace Defense Command — which monitors the skies for threats to North American security — said it has been on heightened alert for about two weeks and not because of the latest tests.

If the timing is correct, the North Korean missiles were launched within minutes of Tuesday's liftoff of Discovery, which blasted into orbit from Cape Canaveral in the first U.S. space shuttle launch in a year.

Hadley suggested the tests might have been an attempt to grab the international spotlight.

"It's very difficult to know what the North Koreans think they are doing this for," Hadley said. "Obviously, it is a bit of an effort to get attention, perhaps because so much attention has been focused on the Iranians."

There was no immediate comment from offiials in North Korea. Han Song Ryol, deputy chief of North Korea's mission to the U.N. in New York, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview: "We diplomats do not know what the military is doing."

North Korea's missile program is based on Scud technology provided by the former Soviet Union or Egypt, according to American and South Korean officials. North Korea started its Rodong-1 missile project in the late 1980s and test-fired the missile for the first time in 1993.

North Korea had observed a moratorium on long-range missile launches since 1999. It shocked the world in 1998 by firing a Taepodong missile over Japan and into the Pacific Ocean.

The United States and its allies South Korea and Japan have taken quick steps over the past week to strengthen their missile defenses. Washington and Tokyo are working on a joint missile-defense shield, and South Korea is considering the purchase of American SM-2 defensive missiles for its destroyers.

The U.S. and North Korea have been in a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program since 2002. The North claims to have produced nuclear weapons, but that claim has not been publicly verified by outside analysts.

While public information on North Korea's military capabilities is murky, experts doubt that the regime has managed to develop a nuclear warhead small enough to mount on its long-range missiles.

Nonetheless, Lt. Gen. Michael Maples, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, told U.S. lawmakers last week that officials took the potential launch reports seriously and were looking at the full range of capabilities possessed by North Korea.

It's nice to know we have back upon this one. Chances are, we won't even have to get involved. Japan is the richest country in the world and they can easily fund a war using Japanese and S. Korean soldiers. Besides, with Japanese technology they won't even need many ground troops.

Not to mention all of the US anti-missle tech that Japan has purchased from America. Japan`s ageis class destroyers include several with anti-ballistic missile capability. That plus the ground based Patriot and Patriot II systems already in place should keep a N. Korean strike from doing too much damage.

Note that all the reports say that the missles failed after launch. That might be true but it is possible that they were shot down by US or Japanese Ageis destroyers which remain on station 24/7 in the Sea of Japan.

The japanese and chinese are silent but deadly. They sit and wait patiently and when the time is right strike. I have no doubt Japan would obliterate the north koreans. The japanese are nuts. I don't know what north korea is thinking. I think they forgot the days of the kamikazee's! Not to bright on North Korea's part if you ask me!

Well, it seems the reports say the fell into the ocean. But, who knows.

There is a difference between having the technology available and being intelligent enough to make it work. We can put a man in space but I would bet if you gave everyone here at FG all the parts to make a space shuttle and all of us worked together we still couldn't put it together right. Not until someone can in and showed us how to do it right. I don't think there are too many people that are willing to show N Korea how to do it right. Mainly because of the backlash. Everyone knows that a nuclear missle, or any missle, that is shot at the US will constitute return fire. If the actually use a nuke you could safely say that they will be wiped from the map. Maybe we will use nukes, maybe not. Maybe we will just drop a few thousand normal bombs. Who knows. I just hope it doesn't go that far.

Gentlemen, right now the US stands in alliance with Japan, UK, Spain, England, Germany and Italy. Secondary allies include S. Korea, France, Canada, Mexico, India, Pakistan, Israel, Turkey. Third tier allies include Russia, Poland, Romania, Greece, Check Republic, and others.

Bring it the fuuck on. We are the Roman Empire, like it or not.

When push comes to shove, I wouldn't count on Germany or France to save my life. They may act like allies but they could give a shit less about us. When push comes to shove we can really only count on the UK (which is the same as England), Austrailia and Japan. Now, with the threat being in N Korea we can add S Korea to that list but I really wouldn't count on anyone else lifting a finger. IMO. If the threat was in the middle east, I would say Isreal is our best allie, but you can forget about Pakistan acutally going to war against another middle east country on our behalf. Now, India, that's a possibility if the threat is close to them.

Sure, if it were an all out WWIII, then more people would want to be with us than against us for obvious reasons but with these little wars, most people don't give a shit about us. We are expected to handle all of our own problems. Yet, when someone else has a problem, who do they call for help, us! Yeah, the world acts as if it doesn't need us but they also know it would be phuked without us.

I would put money on it that that at least the long range missle was shot down. For all we and Japan know, it could've been the real deal and N.Korea was just calling it a "test". We dont know it that missle had a live warhead or not, and I'm not willing to take the chance that it isnt.

Excuse me but why are we involving other countries into this mess with N.Korea. Bush is scared now and is asking for international help. N.Korea would not use these missles on other countries I know this for sure, only on us. Bush sounds pathetic and scared IMHO and is making the country feel and look like bunch of pussies. What is all this talk about USA being the most powerful country ??

I'm sorry but someone needs to shut up our ****sucking president. I am %100 sure that we will not have any countries backing us up, maybe England.

We go and invade small , poor countries but are scared to go into battles with powerful countries. Thats just great. If they use missles on us, then I'm sure there IS something we can use on them.
