  • Rattlesnakes

My pitbull is at the vet for a couple days after getting bitten on the nose by a rattlesnake today. Thats 2 snakes in a matter of minutes. The first snake I killed with a shovel, but I didnt see the second snake, I just heard my dog yelp and she came running up with her face swollen like a watermelon.
Is there any way to keep snakes off my property? Since I didnt see that second one, I know its out there and I hope I can find it. I would hire some professionals if I knew they could get the snakes. The last exterminator told me just to sprinkle snake away...I dont think thats gonna do the job. I think someone could trap them.

moth balls will work man but you need to replace them pretty often. people will sprinkle them around their property lines and wood piles where i grew up after every rain storm dried up. barns and work building where really bad with copper heads and rattle snakes and it seemed to work for that. only trade off is if you are a hippy environmental person it is hell on the environment.

Ya, mothballs should help to keep them away. That snake away product is just powdered mothballs but its damn expensive.,I bought 28 pounds for about $120. Im gonna try to find mothballs in bulk. I need about 100 pounds of mothballs.
My dog will be at the vet for another day. Gettin bit by a rattlesnake is no joke.

I've always heard you can put down sulfur tablets around your yard to help keep snakes away. I use diatomaceous earth throughout my yard combined with sulfur tablets around the perimeter and never have any significant problems with bugs, or snakes. I also use Tempo around the house for bugs. Keeps everything sway. Not really sure if the sulfur is working, or if it's just a coincidence, but I know the D-Earth and Temp work wonders for bugs.

My uncles swears by this but may not be good for your dog. Sprinkle cayenne pepper around the perimeter of your yard. Snakes smell with their tongue he says. They stick their tongue out and get a dab of pepper and go away quick. He says it works on copperheads which are pit vipers like rattlesnakes but who knows.

They have a rattlesnake vaccine for dogs so it might be worth looking into. It’s available at a vet in my area. Here are a couple different options

                Antidote 3 Rattler Antivenin

Here's my pitbull yesterday with a 6 foot Red Racer snake. Her second kill so far. These snakes are aggressive and mean as hell.

That’s a krazy looking snake [emoji216]. I’m in the mid Atlantic and we have timber rattlesnakes , copperheads, cottonmouths in my immediate area. I’ve never seen a snake that looks like that. We do have black racers here.

Thanks! It wouldnt be a bad idea for me to keep some of that anti venom around just in case. It cost me $900 to do anti venom at the vet so I would save a ton of money doing it myself. Not sure how much you need to inject into a dog thats been bit.
I did get all my dogs vaccinated last week against rattlesnakes

That’s great that you did. I’m not sure either how many ml you would inject. I want to get my Dane vaccinated with it as well. Especially since we go hiking. Hell about two weeks ago we’re taking our nightly walk and had a fox come charging at us but stopped about 15ft away before going back to the yard. My Great Dane weighs about 103lbs but is still a puppy and I don’t think that fox 30lbs maybe wanted any. Now he is wild I get it but I think if he would have attacked and my Dane realized it was trying to hurt him then it’d have been a wrap! Cuz he’s had his rabies shots and he’s fuckin strong and he’d rip that fox in half if he got ahold of it.

But I think what happened was that the fox had just killed something and we startled it and it was just protecting his kill. But needless to say I’m going to start carrying a little blowback pellet pistol when we start walking. I ain’t trying to have the neighbors and popo see me carrying a .380 or 9mm walking the streets at night lol

That red racer bit my Pitbull on the face but she ignored it and kept fighting until the snake was dead. She had some blood on her face from it, but wasnt serious. Not like being bit by a rattlesnake. Hell, 2 weeks ago when the rattlesnake bit her, she still kept growling and tryi8ng to get at the snake. It was only until later that I realized she had been bitten.

need to watch those non venomous bites as well man. they can get terrible bad infections from them that will mess them up almost as bad as a rattlesnake.
