Oil changes

1. Do you do your own oil changes or pay to have it done.

2. If you pay, where do you go? (dealer, mechanic shop, quick lube place, ect.)

3. Conventional, blended, or full synthetic?

4. How often do you change it?

I Have been changing my own oil since I worked at a jiffy lube as a kid. It is easy and saves me $20 on a synthetic oil change.

My wife's car has free oil changes from the dealer but my son and I change our own oil in the garage.

I use synthetic in the wrangler and my motorcycles. It holds up better to the abuse I put it through.

I change it 2X a year, about every 2,000-3,000 miles. I do not drive a lot.

Every 3000 on 1 and every 6000 on the other

I prefer the quick lube places that let me sit in my truck with my dogs the whole the time they change my oil. Its expensive. I think it runs me about $75 and I do it every 3,000 but this next time Im going to at least 5,000. When that annoying dashboard light comes on that says get an oil change NOW comes on , Im going to reset it it

I got to a trusted local quick lube shop for mine.

Always use Mobile 1 full synthetic and get it changed every 5,000 miles. They also rotate my tires for me too every time I go.

My own except for while we had insurance that covered the service, synthetic only and every 6000 miles on the Toyota every 3000 on the older mode chevy

I used to love changing my oil when I had a classic vehicle but alas time is worth gold so I end up taking to dealer on one and my local grease monkey. Synthetic is the only way to go. I put a plethora of freeway miles on so I can stretch with synthetic if I have too!

I go to the dealer that I bought it from. When I bought my car, I got free oil changes for life. I get full synthetic

Thats pretty cool that they rotate tires too. I would go for that. The Valvoline quick lube place checked all my light bulbs and my tire pressure. Thats worth it for me. They only sell Valvoline oil so I got the synthetic whatever it is

full synthetic both cars.. there new and newer, dealer or our mechanic. I don't do it because its getting to be a pain in the ass to get rid of the oil around me. also just more crap in the garage,,

dirt bikes lawnmower and toys all get changed at home with recommended.

if I am going to drive over 1000 miles in a day ill change the oil right before I go otherwise every 5000 miles is good.

Wow, I would have figured more of you change your own oil. I grew up thinking that was just what a man did. My pops was not mechanically inclined but still did his own. I worked at the jiffy lube and they use bulk oil (the gun things they fill your crank case with) Bulk oil absorbs moisture over time. I think it is fine for a normal car but for something that is pushed hard like by jeep or my bikes. I like bottled synthetic.

As for the time to do it, it takes more time to jack up the vehicle than actually do the job. that and letting it drain. I use put the oil back into the bottles with a funnel and take them to the auto parts store next time I go get oil. (also I use it for chain saw oil)

I guess I will do it as long as I am physically able.

also some of you change pretty frequently and use synthetic. really not necessary. you can get 5K miles minimum with conventional oil for most cars now and 10K with syn. I change mine only because I drive a lot of short distances, sometimes it does not get warmed up all the way which is bad for oil. A car that drives long miles on the highway in 1-2 hour trips with minimal city driving can double oil change frequency to more than 10K and it's oil will protect much better than a car that drove 5K all city. It is the heat cycles that break down and pollute oil, not the miles but that is just a simple way to manage your changes. My wife's SUV has a 10K oil change rate. my wrangler only 6K miles.

i think for most of us, changing the oil every 5-7K miles is good especially if you drive in either really cold or really hot climates, push your motor hard like performance driving, offroad, towing, lots of city driving, lots of idling or not getting up to full operating temp.

as for $$$ I can do a full syn oil change for under $30, Sams club puts 6 quarts of mobil one on sale for $24 (jeep take 5.75 quarts) filter is a paper filter not a screw on (even easier and cleaner to change) $2.75 at walmart (next door to sams and I can get a 6 pack of brew) AND I like doing it.

My father, also, never had anyone change his oil or for that matter had nobody fix anything but him,lol. We learned a lot by watching our parents. I have pondered changing my own many times over my driving years. At this age though....NAH! It's great to hear you still do this! Good for you!

I used to do my own years ago but now I'm thinking of doing it just in the warmer months and taking it to the shop when it's colder. Plus the shop we go to isn't far, fairly cheap and rotate the tires as well. I only drive 35mi round trip to work and back and rarely go further than that on days off so it'll be changed every few months now.

my truck has 240k miles on it I change it or have one of my guys at my shop change it.. 2 things I don't like people to touch one is my wife and the other is my truck. if someone works on my truck it is normally one of the guys who work for me..

I have always ran amsoil and I will always run that I use that in everything I own from my truck to my lawn mower etc.

I change the wifes car its a pita because it has a big card board skid plate on the bottom you have to take off to access everything..

I also use those FUMOTO drain plugs.. have used those for years now they work great.. grab the drain pan and turn the lever and oil comes out. no more stripped threads or leaking drain plug gaskets..
