  • Barbell Row Angle

Barbell rows is one of my all-time favorite back exercises. Personally, I do mine about a 90 degree angle but I see so many different angles with some guys almost standing straight up turning it into an upright row. For me, keeping my back flat at a 90 degree angle keeps me from cheating and using momentum and really helps focus on the squeeze. I actually feel more strain on my lower back at a 45 degree angle.

For those of you that do barbell rows during your back workout, what angle do you usually keep when doing the exercise and why?

i use the smith machine 99% of the time to entirely lock myself into position. i got between 70 and 90 when i do mine as well. the most important part is to actually feel the muscle contract

Ya know, I don't think I've ever used the smith machine for barbell rows. Definitely going to give that a try and see if it helps me focus on the contraction more. I keep my form pretty strict, but like you said I think it will help keep me locked in. I've been utilizing the smith machine more and more for various exercises lately.

I feel most comfortable doing BB rows at just below a 45 degree angle.

The more parallel to the floor you are the more the focus is lats and the more upright it's more rhomboid and upper back. I always try to stay below 45 degrees no matter where I'm targeting though. Tbar rowes I try to stay completely parallel to the floor but as you go heavier it gets tougher to maintain that angle.

I love T-Bar rows too. I typically stay about 90 degree angle on both barbell and T-Bar rows. For me, it seems harder for me to stay at a lower angle doing T-Bar rows for some reason. I'm jumping on the smith machine for my next back day to see if it helps keep me locked in.

I have a sweet spot at about a 70. I believe you've always got to move it around though just like rep speed and weight. Sometimes a little English in there too...got to shock!
