What is everyone's routine for calves? I know genetics plays a huge part, but since calves are one of the most stubborn areas for a lot of us I'm curious to see the different approaches everyone takes when training them. Super high reps, heavy weight, multiple times per week, once per week?

Calves are absolutely my most stubborn area. They are the first thing to go and the last thing to grow for me lol. Right now, I feel like I'm getting the best results hitting them multiple times per week, super heavy weight and pushing them to the point of tears. Really working the stretch at the bottom and pausing the peak contraction. The burn brings tears to my eyes, but for the first time in many years, I actually feel like I'm finally getting some good growth out of them.

Do your calves everyday with high bodyweight reps. I've been doing them every day for almost 5 months and the results are better than expected

      Re: Calves

people focus to much on the top end portion of the contraction pump away with a short choppy motion or use entirely to much weight. what people fail to realize is that when we walk around we work them at the top end 99% of the time and miss out on the bottom end work from the stretch position. so next time you hit calves go ahead and do your 10 or so full range reps then focus another 10-20 reps that are from the full stretch to flat only. i do full sets this way only myself and they are brutal and make them grow like nothing else. that and lots of failure work. they can also be trained very very frequently just like traps forearms and abs

No doubt about it. I love hititng my calves every day. Even if its just one set to failure per day, I hit them and they grow. This doesnt work for everyone but if it does work, I say do it!

I go two weeks of 10-20 reps like 8-10 sets then two weeks of 60-100 reps per set and only 4-5 sets and they will grow!!!!

I hit mine once a week with legs, around 400-450 on angled calf raise machine for 5 sets of 15-25 reps. Been doing that religiously for years and seems to work. Keep having people start conversations in the gym with me about my calves ad nauseum

                      Kick ass calves BigDawg!!

I have to train mine several times a week to get them to respond. I think I may start hitting them everyday. Guns made a really good point about walking around everyday, so I'm really going to focus on the stretch. What really sucks is my legs grow super fast and that just makes my calves look even worse lol.

Maybe the stretching is key too, have always stretched them a lot for martial arts. And calves do take a huge amount of work every day walking around so indeed gotta shock em when you blast them.

I do notice when alot of people are on the calf raise machine that they like to pile on the weight and perform the reps very quickly, yet there calfs are still not at all impressive. When I train calfs I make it a conscience effort to perform the calf raise slowly and flex the muscle for a moment at the peak of the movement. That really gets my calves to respond.
