  • krav maga...?!

Not sure if this is the right place for this subject but I want to know if anyone here knows about krav maga. Since coming to NY and living so close to Chinatown the amount of martial arts schools I see have nearly tripled since I last saw some ten years ago. Most if not all are Kung Fu or varients of Thai boxing /mma. I've been perusing the net and YouTube for mainly self defense techniques and found that krav maga seems to be the way to go. Has anyone here ever dabbled in it or practice it?

I've dabbled in it. It's very very good self defense if you have good control over emotions. You will hurt someone bad if your not in control. It is also great exercise. Ironically I've been contemplating starting this up again!

been to one of the training facilities where it originates and i know a couple top end certified instructors personally. it is not something to be taken lightly and 99.9% of the techniques are designed to kill or perm disable a bad guy. so idk if i would call it a self defense system at all

i was speaking more of the principles of the training not so much the applications. i dont think your every day run of the mill individual would be the best to put into that type of training just for self defense. then again the amount of time to master those principles will prevent those same people from taking advantage of it in the wrong situations.

I too have dabbled with it. Great cardio work out .. aot of hand to hand action , you'll learn fast what your strength and weakness are with street fighting cause thats really what it is. I will pick it up again when I get back home to a normal life..
I had done it like a year straight 2 to 3 times a week years ago . The bad was the place constantly wanted to up sell everything and always had a reason I needed to fork out more cash.. pissed me off cause I give two shits about belts and certs and fancy shirts... I just wanted to learn to fight better.

There's actually a Krav Maga place not too far away from me. I've never really seen a lot of people there, but always thought about checking it out.

When I first got to the treatment facility I'm at now I hooked up with this lanky skinny Russian kid whom I later found out he's actually a Russian Jew. Lived back and forth between Russia, Israel and the US. Did a military stint in the Israeli army tank and border divisions and when I asked him about krav maga he laughed and said the same thing, it's main purpose is to incapacitate, maim or kill an enemy. Not an opponent, not a sparring partner or combat sport. He definitely seemed to know his shit though cause quite a few things he showed me another Israeli I met later on showed me the same stuff. Here in NYC, the hood basically, because most addiction programs are placed in pretty bad areas, if you're in a scrap chances are you're being mugged, assaulted or just tested especially if you're a "white boy ". I want to know I can break something on someone so if there's a next time they'll think deeper before acting a fool lol...

                    Re: krav maga...?!

it is the best self defense IMO. I just do not like the fact you cannot train it real world. kicking your training partner's knee out and gouging their eyes is not conducive to having many partners.

I love Muay Thai. it is great for self defense but lacks ground fighting so it is incomplete. so one must know grappling.

I did krav maga and KFM (used in batman) it was fun but I like sparring too much so sport fighting was for me.

                      Re: krav maga...?!

I have been a Kempo student for eleven years and yeah it is what you want to get out of it. In all Martial Arts there's something for everyone really. The streets are dangerous and deadly, and I'm not going to have some asshole repeatedly kick my head like a f'ing soccer ball if I hit the ground. I'm not a kid and I'm not going to bullshit and go toe to toe and box ya or whatever, I'm going to dislocate, fracture, or break somethin' on ya and your friend. If I'm your victim I have no f'ing clue what your intentions are, I have a life, a lot of people depend on me. I lived in "ethnic" neighborhoods all over so I know what it's like to grow up as a lil white kid. I been beaten and bullied a lot,...at this point in my life I have total confidence in what I have been taught,..and I'm not pullin' punches if that time ever comes. You have a lot of opportunity so pick what you feel works for ya. for me I like being a part of something, a team, yet as an individual if that makes sense ? I like doing forms and weapons they are fun and beautiful. Yet at the sametime I like learning how to really f#ck somebody up easily. Plain assed Karate was kinda' boring for me, I allways wanted to be like Qui Chang Kane, he's like all cool and friendly till you push his buttons and act a fool, then with the grace and wave of a hand you're a f#cked up pile of broken bones. Krav Maga ? hell yeah ! Walk in there and give it a go I'm sure you will have a blast !
