  • Had our first krav maga class last night

Last night my gym had it's first krav maga class. There were only 3 of us in the class though. So far, it seems like it's going to be VERY effective! It's like a combination of muay thai, boxing, and BJJ but just not as pretty. It is made to straight up HURT somebody (in self defense of course). It really opened my eyes to how the slightest defense can really open a guy up for attacks. Positions that I had never really thought of us creating that opening. It's going to be interesting for sure.

Nice bro, krav has always interested me especially if you only had to choose one discipline.
    Keep us updated.

Yeah, I currently train in Muay thai, boxing, and BJJ...now krav maga as well. My main goal is to just become confident that if I find myself in a self defense situation, I will not be worried about being able to handle myself.

Do it man. The thing with my area is I have never heard of anyone remotely close that teaches it until now. That's why I'm excited about getting in on it from the beginning....kind of get the upper hand on everyone in case it were to catch on. I've trained in something off and on my whole life but this is a different mindset to be honest. I mean, if you think about the situation you are training for, it's no joke for sure.

I hear you. That's how I felt after I had my meniscus surgery and it's nowhere near as bad as acl issues.

Yeah, I've heard some guys joke about it just teaching you to kick someone in the nuts and run, but that's not what I got from the class last night. Yeah, we worked on groin kicks, but those are just to set up an explosion of strikes with knees, kicks, elbows, punches, etc....no way my teacher is going to teach us to run. Now all teachers will teach you to avoid these situations if at all possible, but if someone lays their hands on you or puts your life in danger, he teaches no mercy man. He said "Look, these situations are not based on winning and losing on points...it could be winning or losing your life or your family's life." The class isn't that serious really....but that's the mindset you have to have if you plan on using the techniques successfully in real life. I know that's sound cheesy but that's the way I look at it.

I meant to add that you are right. I believe that krav maga is a great mixture of the other 3 arts I mentioned. It's not as pretty to look, but who cares as long as it works, right? I'll definitely keep an update in here. Right now, we will only have class 2 times per week I think. Like I said, it just started last night and there were only 3 of us. Not sure how long it will take to get the word out or if there are really even that many people interested in learning. There are a lot of MMA fighters in my area and they are just concentrated on that which is understandable. They could care less about this kind of stuff. But I am 35, so ....self defense is my main goal. That and it's a great way to stay in shape.

Hope you have fun with it and learn. How long are the classes and how does the teacher feel about weightlifting and this particular training?

Our teacher hasn't said anything about teaching the kids yet. I have seen kids getting classes on bullying using krav maga techniques though. I am going to teach my step son either way. Especially since I will be learning this one from the very beginning and not playing catch up.

I'll enjoy it. I love this stuff. Our classes are generally an hour or so long give or take. He is big on conditioning so we do a lot of core work and conditioning work so it just depends on how long we do that after the class itself.

As far as weightlifting goes, he's all for it. He's a muscled up guy himself and pretty good size...very intimidating if you don't know him. He's in great shape! He does all of the teaching, he does the conditioning with every class, he has bootcamps before the martial arts classes for people that want to lose weight and he does that with them, etc...

With that being said, I am going to come up with a 1xw routine because with all of the striking I do and BJJ, my shoulders pretty much stay smoked so I don't think they could handle much more as far as weightlifting goes. Maybe once they get better conditioned. But I haven't been in the gym in probably 2 or 3 months.

                      good luck....

I used to do this. enjoyed it but due to work had trouble going regularly and it wasn't cheap monthly so I had to quit.. I would recommend it highly and would love to get back into it.

i have always wanted to do it. i did KFM for 5-6 months, it is similar i think but not for sure. it focuses on defending multiple attackers which was fun. Keysi KFM Promo Video - YouTube

the instructor flaked out and quit. luckily i was month to month.

krav maga seems like it is big enough where schools will be there when you go back. There is a large core following

i would assume a background in H2H would be beneficial?

KFM looks somewhat like Krav but I already see differences in the two from that video. Like having your hands attached to your head to block with elbows wouldn't be that ideal if the attacker had a knife or something. I know it was just a short video though. It's somewhat similar.

I think with my background in striking and ground work that I will get up to speed on krav fairly quickly. It uses the same techniques and really, it's a lot of common sense too. It will just take 1000s of reps to make it second nature so it comes quickly. Our teacher likes us to start all the defense with our hands at our sides. He says no one walks around with their guard up...haha.
