  • our daughter's essay

We try to make it a point to discuss our daughters school day, on a daily basis. Yesterday she tells us about an argumentative essay the class has to write. There are different subjects each kid is working on. Her teacher assigned her to write an essay about "why she is against kids in competitive sports". I immediately thought this was fantastic and of course Fuzo took the other way, at first. Her teacher is well aware of her competitive edge, and sports. I think it is awesome that she is being challenged with this, as it makes her think and look at the other side of things. I love to read what kids write

Thats an odd subject to force a kid to write about. I dont get the point of it. Thats like telling someone to write about why they hate their job

i am surprised it isnt something about it being great to be a muslim or why it is bad to be white. they need to keep ideology out of the classroom entirely as well as religion.

This is actually a very common writing assignment to get you to learn to write from the opposing point if view.

I liked it right when she told me. This is a task to think about. If she had to write about why competitive sports are great, now that would be way to easy for her. I learned most from my hard assignments.

i feel it would be better if it was "why she is for kids in competitive sports" against has a negative connotation to it, and sports are great for kids, building teamwork, learning to love competition, being active, etc. just my .02

Part of the class did one way and the other did the other. She is in competitive sports. She didn't have a problem with doing this at all and that is what matters. Regardless if she did, it was her assignment. It is complete, and I am looking forward to reading it. I have my thoughts on both sides but its her work not mine so I will be quiet about it.

No competition whatsoever for kids. Every kid gets an A+ and a 1st place trophy. Stop keeping score. Because losing sucks and kids should not be forced to feel like crap. Its not good for them. They might get an inferiority complex. The End.

                          Re: our daughter's essay

I can see it from both sides. It's certainly good getting kids to think outside of the box and from opposing points of view, but some of the assignments can be a bit negative as I think it's crucial to support kids in their passions. My fiance is a teacher, so I see a lot of the back end aspects of the curriculum. The curriculum they have to follow is horrible, especially at the middle school level if they teach a subject required to take their state's academic assessment test. Disciplinary actions are a joke and from my understanding it's almost impossible to actually fail a student. Not only that, but in certain districts it falls back on the teacher. Students are given so many chances down the line to make up, do extra and anything else they can to pass, the next grade is almost handed to them. I've talked to many of her coworkers from various districts and for the most part I get a first class view of why the public school system sucks. At the end of the day you end up with kids who don't know what it's like to actually earn something and can't do anything on their own without someone holding their hand. However, I've come across a few teachers I would consider exceptional, great at thinking outside the box and engaging students in lessons they are going to need in real life. Teachers like that are very rare, but they're out there lol.

I think the opposite fuzo. sounds like she is trying to get your daughter to recognize other opinions on a subject using her own experience as a competitive athlete as a counter. I think this will give her an innate ability to see problems from multiple perspectives if she learns her lesson and I feel she is super smart so yeah.

kids today see thinks in a narrow scope and are very myopic. this is a great exercise to prevent this. if she argued FOR kids in competitive sports she would learn nothing.
