My son asked me to workout with him!

He is 18 and painfully skinny. think of a scarecrow 6'3" and 130#, all arms and legs. He has done martial arts since he was 10 but now wants to put on some mass for the ladies. I had asked him if he wanted to go to the gym but he always said "nah i'm good" until now and it was his idea.

He had MAJOR surgery October 2014. they had to dissect most of his back to fix a bunch of broken discs and fuse him from his neck to his lumbar. (he has more metal in his back than the terminator) He never put back on mass/weight since. (he has my crazy freakish ecto genes unfortunately)

he asked me to go, so happy!

anyway I told him I would pay for his membership but he has to go 3X a week minimum. ($10 a month)

So we went, we warmed up on the treadmills for 10 then did a full circuit. I only let him do one light set of each machine. he will be sore. (I will too) I made him a shake when we got home.

He told me "thanks dad" and gave me a hug. warmed my heart, i love my boy with everything I am. getting to spend time with him at the gym is like winning the lotto as he is normally school, work, friends or with his GF.

Any tips on supps? weight gainers, creatine, ect?

that's pretty freaking sweet jipped. it sucks that he has had that much work done at such a very young age. at least he has you and your experience to guide him down the right path though

OH man that is very warming to the hear bro! Thanks for sharing.

Just take it easy. He will build faster than you think. Nutrition and getting him quantity calories is prob the best approach. I don't see anything wrong with adding creative and glutamine in for him. Make sure he's hydrating and eating and he's going to be gtg for awhile!

Great story. I can remember almost begging my father to workout with me when I was a kid but he refused. He helped get me into it when I was about 9. He got me Arnolds Modern Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding and a few weights. But he refused to workout with me as I got older. It was a huge let down... I can't wait to pass some of my interest and knowledge down to my son and daughter. Congrats brutha...
I believe in supplements. I don't see anything wrong with protein powder a multi vit, fish oil, and after some consistency creatine.

My son is only seven but is dying to train. When he was three he tried curling his mothers 2lb DBS. Then one day I was helping a friend set up his gym and I had vinny come with me and he practiced db benches and squats and curls with the little DBS. He has watched bodybuilding videos with me and he knows some of the poses and last weekend he said "I want to be a bodybuilder like my daddy." It was very cool.

We have made him some homemade weight gainers by using milk, ice cream, pb and some whey isolate. His doc recommends ensure plus the ice cream and pb and we have done that as well but I added some whey in too. For your son I would say creatine, bcaas, glutamine and a multi. I was always hooked on animal packs for my multistory since my twenties.

Fuck I would train with him and start feeding him .I have two daughters so I have to train twice as hard they have no brother to watch there backs.good luck and get those gains brother

That's great brotha!! I started training with my dad way back in the day when I first got into bodybuilding. First time I'd ever gone to a gym was with him. Some of the best moments of my life were spotting my dad and him spotting me. That's one of the best father / son moments that will last a lifetime. My dad's much older now and here I am a grown man, but we still catch a workout together every chance we get.

thats freaking awesome man. my son now 21 is an athlete. hes been doing wrestling,baseball (at a high level) martial arts since he was 5. my son hates to work out with me. i wish he would i think he may be a little embarrassed i can lift more. i promised myself if he starts training again with me ill pull back on the alpha male shit so he feels comfortable with me in the gym. good luck op and keep your son gong.

he is a sore fella today. we trained tuesday eve and he said yesterday I am not really sore dad. I said just wait. his shoulders and legs are the most sore

also I told him NEVER skip leg day.

sucks to hear about his major surgery but awesome that he asked to workout with you. my son has issues communicating/closeness with his mom and i but a few years back did join my gym after a brief stint at Snap(crap)Fitness and happily took some workout advice and nutrition tips. i as well love my son more than life and felt good we had that bond as well as our martial arts training together. hope you guys have a blast training together.

no blasting for us bro. my SI joint and the disc between L4-L5 are fubar, his back is stronger than mine now even if it is just a solid stick of bone and metal. I am proud of my boy he has overcome so much, makes me tear up when i think back to his face when he had to get up to go to the bathroom and the pain etched there was heart rending. he pushes and I have to hold him back until he gets a few week in and his tendons and muscles strengthen so he does not get hurt. I will hopefully instill in him training smarter than I as we are thin framed people.and get hurt fairly easy with big weights. (do not mistake hurt for lack of pain tolerance, my kid stopped taking pain pills within 2 weeks of having his whole back dissected from the neck to the lumbar. and we do Muay Thai which hurts all the time) I am saying my days of big cycles in the late 90s where I put on huge mass and was lifting huge weights have broken my body and I want my son to do well and not get hurt. I hope he never tries gear.
