when you injure an area, it draws fluid and other stuff into the area and around the area of the injury. this is entirely normal to have happen and is why the docs tell you to apply rice to help. rest the puppy, ice the puppy keep the puppy compressed with an ace bandage or wrap of some sort and elevate it above the heart. i have used brown paper bags soaked in a little vinegar in the past to keep swelling down in joints. wrap it in the bag then apply the ace bandage or wrap to that. keep it iced up. as it heals the swelling is going to move down the leg also so dont get freaked out when your calf and ankle eventually swell up also
work very hard not to let that swelling get out of control mm. it can cause more damage and slow down the healing process if you let it get out of hand
