Hard workers over worked?

I was raised a certain way where you work your ass off, don't ask for hand outs, and figure out a way to make "it" work.

Had this discussion with my mom the other day so thought I'd bring it here. Think how much life has changed for the "hard working American". I think about my 78 year old grand father who worked hard, my grandmother stayed home raised six kids, worked jobs when they needed it but for the most part my grandfather was the bread winner and it all worked. The early part of my life my mother was home with me and my siblings but then divorce happened and she had to go to work so not a great comparison.

Fast forward, every hard working person I know has to have two hard working partners to make it and even then you come up short. When we reach the age of retirement are we just going to be worn out? Completely sacked from over work and chasing the hard workers dream? Seems life and out American systems keep cutting into the American dream more and more. Where does it end?

I also come from a family where my dad worked his ass off and Mom was home with us 4 kids. he was able to retire comfortably at age 53 cause he prepared. We all had some type of job at age 15 and were raised to be independent. I don't think our generation does this as much. The problem is also what "we" think is a necessity and back then they didn't have those things nor even needed such. This world has become so much about things we think we must have and life was a bit simpler than.

I cant say I really like the way things are now but we have to adapt somewhat to this time we live in. I think we are going to work a hell of a lot longer now before retirement and by then we may be not enjoying that as much as we will be older. This is why we must try to maintain helth and happiness as we work hard to pay the bills and the "things" we think we should have.

Its almost impossible to save any decent amount of money, because the government lets corporations and inflation run out of control. Every dollar printed by the central bank is made with the condition that it will be paid back with interest. If it already has interest applied to it the only way to pay it back is to print more and more money and its a never ending cycle. It automatically makes everyone in debt before they are even born, pretty much a modern version of slavery.

no here is the absolute kicker to this idea and thought. when i was growing up i remember how ashamed people were to have to be on government assistance/food stamps. these people actually needed the help yet the would try there best to hide it and bust their hump to get a job so they didnt need it. now everyone thinks they are entitled to it and they flaunt it like it is something that they deserve. two quick stories that come to mind:
1- i know a business owner here that opened up a new deny's. he needed 100 + employees upon opening. he got right around 50 and he told me that the reason why is because even the best waitress who breaks herself off is only going to make 50-55k a year. now why would she give up the 60k + that the gov gives her for her 3 kids and she gets to stay home. idk how much truth their is to that story but that is what he told me
2- my mom drives a school bus for shits and giggles to keep her cdl current. she has a kid on her bus that's parents are on ssi disability (not a damn thing wrong with either of them besides being dope heads). the kid get's on the bus and tells my mom he cant wait till he turns 18 so he can marry a girl have a bunch of kids so he can make his check bigger. this came out of the mouth of a 6 year old. that right there is our society and why no one works hard as a majority anymore

I too come a family where my dad worked, and my mom stayed home and raised four kids. I've been busting my butt since I was 14 working jobs to help where I could, and I'm proud to say that it continued into my adult life. My wife doesn't work and she gets to stay home with our two girls. It's not easy to make ends meet, but I'll continue to break my back if I have too as long as my kids do not go without. I will probably be one of those guys that never stops working. My dad retired at age 60. He enjoyed three months of retirement before he passed. I've sometimes wondered if he had kept doing the job he loved (he was forced to retire at 60) would he still be around? Surprisingly I think so. My grandpa was always on the go, he told me once that if he ever stopped working and being active, that he might as well just throw in the towel. Just my two cents for what it is worth.

My dad retired at age 60. He enjoyed three months of retirement before he passed. I've sometimes wondered if he had kept doing the job he loved (he was forced to retire at 60) would he still be around? Surprisingly I think so. My grandpa was always on the go, he told me once that if he ever stopped working and being active, that he might as well just throw in the towel. Just my two cents for what it is worth.

You just never know, and I am sorry to hear your Dad passed at still a young age. My father is 78 and has been retired for 25 years now and has never sat still since, lol. Never hear him complain even when he hurts..he just goes, goes, goes. I am glad I inherited that gene.

Exactly Baby! It a good gene to have! I'll have to post a pic one day of the old man.... 60 years old and still sporting a six pack! My dad stayed active with 8 grandkids (my two came along after he passed away) but he was lucky to have a job he loved. He started as a fighter pilot at 21, and retired as a commercial pilot at 60. It was truly what he lived for. I'll be honest, I think not being able to do that anymore was a just too hard of a blow. Not trying to hijack the thread....
