old pets

I have a dog I had since he was born. I tore the birth sac open and gently rubbed his little back as he drew his first breath of air. That was 15 years ago and he has been my companion ever since. Most of his teeth are gone but his health is good for his age. He is getting senile and forgetful. He still does his business outside like he supposed to. Sometimes he just stares off in the distance not looking at anything. Sometimes I help him get into my truck.
My question is when is it time to say good-bye to him?

You will know but it sounds like its getting close. Some people want to wait till last minute because of te bond but to me as soon as I feel that dog isn't happy and is suffering its time. My lab was amazing but she was losing her hearing and had trouble breathing. One day we took her for a walk and she didn't go to far before she had To be picked up and carried inside her was suffocating. She could have went a little longer but for her it was time.

Thnks bro. She was wonderful I wasn't so upset she lived a full life and it was her time. You usually know when it's time. It may be one thing that happens and All of a sudden you know. A
Good idea may be to ask a vet. Vet is a good outside no string attached opinion. Sometimes you love the animal so much you don't see that it may be time and a trustworthy vet should give you a good honest opinion.

I had a lab we found on the side the road when I was just 3 or 4, and she lived 17 years after that. She got to where she couldnt get up on her own to eat and drink so we had to let her go.

Man I feel bad for you. I know what that feels like.
I had two german shepherds, father and son, 2 years apart. They were always together, playing and running. The dad died at 14 and a year later the son died. The father died right in my living room. The son died a year later when the vet said he was in bad shape and we agreed to put him down. It was brutal. I went back the next day to pick him up. He was in a black trash bag and frozen. I took him home and buried him next to his dad. It still hurts to talk about it.

Thanks for sharing the love you had for our 4 leg family members. Even though they are animals they bring out the best in us.
