Gym tells woman to cover up because her ‘toned body’ intimidated others

.The Planet Fitness gym in Richmond, California is standing behind their dress code policy after one member claimed that she was told to put a shirt over her intimidatingly toned body.

As reported by KTVU Channel 2, Tiffany Austin was recovering from a car accident and getting back in shape with her first workout at the gym. However, her time exercising was cut short when a Planet Fitness employee stopped her. Austin explained, “She says, you know, ‘Excuse me, we've had some complaints. You're intimidating people with your toned body. So can you put on a shirt?’”

Ms. Austin was wearing a spaghetti strap tank top and capri pants with her midriff exposed, and she doesn’t think her attire was out of line. “I don’t feel like it’s anything crazy, but I mean you tell me if it’s burning your eyes,” Austin said with a laugh. Reportedly she was only told that the gym dress code prohibited wearing string tank tops. The Planet Fitness customer agreed to wear one of the shirts the gym provides patrons for free, but while she waited for the tee, another employee approached her with objections to her clothing. Feeling harassed and intimidated herself, Austin decided to get her money back and cancel her membership at the gym advertised as the “Judgement Free Zone” whose policy bans “gymtimidation.” McCall Gosselin, Planet Fitness spokesperson, said that criticizing Austin for being toned, “…is not in line with the Planet Fitness policy whatsoever.”

According to their website, Planet Fitness’ philosophy of a Judgement Free Zone, “means members can relax, get in shape, and have fun without being subjected to the hard-core, look-at-me attitude that exists in too many gyms.” It’s a policy that is attractive to many Americans. With over 5million members, Chris Rondeau, the co-founder and chief executive, says the gym chain is the fastest growing in the U.S. “It’s unfair to like, show off your body and that’s what they don’t want,” said a gym-goer to KTVU. Yahoo! Odd News made a call to the Richmond, California Planet Fitness and was told that while the dress code is not available on the gym’s website, signs within the gym explain the policy.

Director of the Athletic Studies Center at UC Berkeley, Derek Van Rheenen, told the station, “In a lot of ways I actually think what Planet Fitness is doing is a positive thing. I think they obviously need to iron out some of these issues. But you know, sport in the United States is by nature discriminatory. It is selective. It is elitist."

The Planet Fitness website (Planet Fitness)
Planet Fitness does have its detractors who say that some of their policies go too far. In November 2006 Albert Argibay was removed by police from the Planet Fitness in Wappingers Falls, NY. Reportedly, Argibay had broken the gym’s rule of no grunting, though he says that he was just breathing heavily. The no grunting policy may be what Planet Fitness is most known for. The gym sounds its “lunk alarm,” a siren and flashing lights, whenever a gym-goer is found displaying lunk-like behavior. Posters are said to define a lunk as “one who grunts, drops weights, or judges.”

With membership rates that start at just $10 per month, and monthly pizza nights and bagel breakfasts, the gym chain is likely to keep attracting their target demographic of occasional exercisers.

To me this is just a sorry as it gets. how can anyone truly get a good workout in without an occasional "grunt" or some deep heavy breathing. It's too bad to cause the places are huge with plenty of room an equipment, but I know I would be kicked out the 1st time I did legs. LOL Wonder how they feel about throwing up after a set. LOL

No, lol its a joke. I lift for free at another gym, but it has weird hours, so I have to go to planet fitness to do cardio. They don't have any free weights except dumbells and half the machines are too small for me to get in comfortably.

I don't have giant calves or anything and I almost got stuck in there decline, trying to do decline smith bench. Its not a lifter friendly gym. Arm day is about all most guys here could get away with there.

just another example of how soft this country has become. Now we need a gym for the weak and fat so they feel comfotable while working out. WTF Planet Fitness knows that the people who they targeting for membership will only use them for short periods of time and then they just collect the money with less where and tear on the equipment and ect. Pizza parties at the gym. Really? Lets help the fat f**ks stay fat instead of helping and motivating. I can go on and on as this just drives me insane. Where have all the old school dark and dirty gyms gone? I miss them! Closest thig I have is my basement.

I think the whole concept behind Planet Fitness was to have a gym that your average joe can work out at without feeling intimidated by Huge muscle heads you find at Golds Gym , World Gym etc ... I go to a gym that's similar to PF , but at least there's no grunt alarm and the free weights go up to 80 pounds . I stick with a gym like this because the price is right for me or else I'd be at a more hardcore gym . I read what happened to that lady on yahoo and feel the staff at PF should be complimenting her for being in such great shape instead up having to cover up . It's a bunch of bullshit and what can you do .

im a very competitive person so if i see someone who i feel looks better than me then i work that much harder. it does get it my nerves when some kid is throwing around the 30z screaming like a barbarian trying to act like hes throwing around daddy weight, but that's part of the gym. planet fitness is for people who cant handle it. if you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen, the more members planet fitness has the more heavy weight that is free for me to use lol

Remember- this is the same gym who supplies weekly pizzas and donuts for their members.

From the view point of someone who is serious about lifting the company is pathetic. From the view point of a business owner it's a money tree. Imagine this, you have 10,000 members paying every month and only 1000 actually show up each day. It's like you only working 4 hours per week and getting paid for 40. Who wouldn't take that?

There is also a lot more to the story of the guy who got kicked out for grunting. He was actually yelling and when asked not to yell he told the employee go to fuck himself. The. When the manager came over and explained the rules and that she didn't appreciate him cursing out the employee he told her to fuck herself and he would leave when he finished his workout. At that point she canceled him and asked him to leave the premises. He again refused and was then escorted out by the police. As a side note this gentleman was also a CO.
