When you want to believe something irrational, you just believe it despite the evidence. When you know something - you know it because of the evidence. You believe in your god; you only know what you have created in your mind, because there is no evidence to support any knowledge of him.

my take was a gazillion years ago, the powers that be used it too control the savages, and those beliefs have been passed down thru time, changed adopted etc.
also, between the ages of 1-10 the mind is like a computer and the code is written based on parents, evnironment, and countries beliefs, plus your own personal expereinces, combined with personal intelligence and personality
once the code is written it is hard as hell to re-write it, it's why they say folks never change

Well, I'll summarize the fifty volumes.
I think the belief in god comes down to a few fundamental human desires:
survival being the biggest one. Humans are animals but we are rational. With
that ability to reason we understand that we will all, one day, die. It is a side
of affect of having intelligence. We avoid death with a passion but we know
that the death of our loved ones and our own death is inevitable. To deal
with this, humanity has created the afterlife. Where we can share eternal life
without the threat of death. There is a problem with this belief though, it
would offer evil people a pleasant eternity as well - so an unpleasant eternity
had to be created for those who did not deserve "life". A code of morals
would be needed and an all knowing judge - who better than the convenient
all-knowing-creator and at last bigotry was justified on the most fundamental
level of what your imaginary friend's name was.
Yeah, we've discussed this before trip; many of people's psychological problems can be contributed to a flaw (irrationally held premise) in their own philosophical beliefs.
People's minds do not have to be identical for society to hold reason as the standard in which each one of us lives. It's a given there will still be people that are mentally retarded. People will still have different talents, desires and paths in life but people will just acknowledge the superiority of reason.
