  • Parents of school children....please read...

I was talking with a fellow co-worker about her lil 8-year-old girl. She said she received a note from the teacher stating the lil girl rarely or never did her reading homework and the teacher felt that she was "not privileged enough to go on an upcoming field trip". She went on to say that she made a deal with the lil girl that if she did her reading homework that week she could go on the field trip.

Is this right? Can a teacher say that a child has the privilege to go on a field trip or not? Privileged was such a harsh word to me?? Thoughts please

SORRY DEAR, I AGREE WITH THE TEACHER, AND THINK THE PARENTS SHOULD BACK THE TEACHER UP. ME AND MY WIFE (MOSTLY HER) WORK HARD TO KEEP OUR KIDS FOCUSED ON GRADES...IT'S VERY DIFFICULT FOR WORKING PARENTS, BUT SO IMPORTANT TO ESTABLISH THE WORK HABIT'S NOW. WE DIDNT DO THAT WITH MY OLDEST, AND HE'S HANGING BY A THREAD ALL THE TIME. MY DAUGHTER DOES WAY BETTER BECOUSE OF THE IMPORTANCE WE STRESS ON HOMEWORK. IN THE PAST SHE HAS MISSED FIELD TRIP'S, AND SLEEP OVERS, AND B-DAY PARTIES, BUT SHE KNOW'S HOW IT GOES NOW, AND WORKS HARD FOR THOSE PRIVLIDGES. YEP, SUCKED TO HERE HER CRY....BUT, SHE'S NOT SCREWED UP BECOUSE OF IT, BUT RATHER A BETTER STUDENT AND HAPPIER BECOUSE OF IT...JMO

A field trip is a field trip. It is for the entire class not just the privileged ones. Simple as that in my opinion. Privileged is not a word the teacher should have used. I know this little girl isn't the only one in the class that isn't doing everything up to par as far as homework.

YOU MAYBE RIGHT, AND THAT NOTE MAY HAVE WENT TO OTHER PARENTS AS WELL. (AT LEAST I HOPE IT DID, SHOULDNT SINGLE ANYONE OUT)...BUT IT STILL IS PROBOBLY AN ENJOYABLE EVENT, AT 8YRS OLD, I DOUBT IT'S A FACT FINDING MISSION, BUT MORE OF A ZOO TRIP OR SOMETHING, IN WITCH I THINK IT'S FUN, AND THERE FOR A PRIVLIDGE..

I think you may be misunderstanding her use of the word priveledged. In this case, it seems she doesn't mean it in the way we normally think of...being "better" or "higher" up than the others.

What I think she meant, is that a field trip is a priveledge. If a student has poor conduct, they can certainly revoke their priveledge to a field trip. In this case, it's not poor conduct, but poor school/home work. So it would seem she is saying that if she improves her reading habits/homework, then she would "earn" her priveledge to go back. See what I'm saying?

I think it's just a teachers attempt to motivate the girl. The note home was to try and motivate the parents to help. IMO I don't think she went about it the right way, but I can see what she's trying to do. She probably just wants for figure out what pushes this girls buttons so she can educate her. It's a tough job, that's for sure.

Privileged is a strange word to use in this context. Unless what she meant was that it is a privilege to be allowed to go on field trips. I agree with the teacher. I didn't always do my homework, and I missed quite a few recesses (not sure about a field trip - but I know other kids that were barred from going on occasion) because of that. I don't think those actions are unreasonable. However, the girl should not be sitting at home while her classmates are on a field trip. She should be at school studying and learning under the supervision of another teacher.
