    Re: cardio on treadmill

lower your heart rate will help you retain more muscle... of coarse you will still lose fat but with muscle with a cardio heart rate! **** it... just getting in there is what counts!!!!

This is exactly right - once you get into the "cardio"vacular range you'll lose muscle WITH the fat.
That's a viscous cycle too, once you loose that hard earned muscle then you have to doubly hard to lose more fat. You've lost that precious muscle which stokes the metabolism.

When I was dieting hardcore last year I was doing what Big Mikey recommeded with the treadmill at the highest incline and walking at 4mph. I was doing that 5 days per week sometimes 6 for 1hr straight. Now I've only been doing 30 minutes just to maintain. My heart rate is not quite in the cardio zone anymore but it's higher than the fat burning zone. I'll lower the speed to get my heart rate in the lower zone.

alright...38yrs old (that may matter, as i dont remember the math for cardio hr zone and fatloss hr zone). did 3 min's warm up, then went to 3.5mph at 4% incline. took a bit, but heart rate went to/leveled off at about 126....did 30 min's solid (took 19 mins just to get a sweat) and 3 additional mins at the end coming down....how's that? i dont want to burn up the muscle. i realize that, that would also make it harder to lose the fat at resting metab. speed

LOOKS GREAT!!! if heart rate gets too high just lower incline.. recover and incline again if needed! best part is that once you can get the incline up high you may see growth in your calves... i did!

                Too F'n funny!!!
That is exactly what I do!!

I raise the incline and steadily check the heart rate - if it gets too high I drop the incline to settle out a bit.

I also get a added benefit in the calves and if I squeeze the hammys and glutes while at a higher incline I can feel it burn real deep in that soggy area where the glute meets the hams!

                Love the solid advise CTRL!

at 65%-118, 70%-127, 75%-137... so it looks like around 120 or lower! it seem as if you aren't doing much, but remember..... KEEP MUSCLE and LOSE FAT!

                        Ain't got a clue!
Hate to say it but I don't - maybe I could find something online but I am guessing it's going to be X % of your resting rate.
For me I try not to get too mcuh above 120-125 if I hit 126 I tone it down a bit.

7 MINUTES AT 8 MPH ISNT GOING TO BURN ANY MUSCLE. AND YOU NEED CARDIO VASCULAR HEALTH. EVER HUFFED AND PUFFED THROUGH A LEG WORKOUT?

Thanks CTRL - didn't see that!

BIGSARGE - You are correct that we all need to keep cardiovascularly fit. No argument there - heck I don't usually argue with anyone but I was just making my post and I'm sure CTRL is to daved150's original post about gaining or at least maintaining muscle.
The lower intensity is typically the tried and true way to do that.
And without knowing his body specifically we can only advise on the generalities of most situations.

But I also agree with your side so we're all good!

i agree with ya big sarge and sal! it all depends on what your goal is at that point! it's very important to add alittle cadrio during a bulk cycle just to stay fit. too many people think that looking musclar means you're healthy, but that's not always true! during a bulker i run the cardio workout in the evening and add extra calories to compensate for it and it maybe once or twice a week at most! my workouts tend to be intense and my heart rate stays up!!
