A lot of trainers do a lot of stuff that isn't physiologically correct. I know from personal experience that it does what I said. That's how I found out about it. I was training every morning before eating and I wasn't gaining shit. I talked with a CSCS (Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist) from NSCA and he explained it to me. As soon as I added breakfast (protein shake) back in I started gaining mass again. Most trainers are 2 day certs and stop there. Most, not all. The guys who make it to CSCS are the cream of the crop. That's why the only trainers you will find at the US Olympic Training Center are CSCS's. They are the best. Trust me, just because a lot of trainers do it doesn't make it correct, it just means they are all on the same boat. No matter how you slice it, breakfast starts your metabolism. So why in the heck would someone wait until 2-3 hours after they got up to get their metabolism going? It just doesn't make any sense. The theory behind it is that there aren't any calories in the stomach in the morning so the body will only burn fat. Well, that's just bullshit. The body burns fat based on a calories in vs calories out process. If a person eats 3,000 cals a day and can't lose weight and then quits eating breakfast before they train and still eats 3,000 cals a day, they will still be in the same boat.

Now, let me take this even further. Everyone knows that the digestion process burns calories. That's a scientific fact. So, with that fact in mind, what would burn more calories? 30 minutes of cardio at level 6 with an empty stomach or 30 minutes of cardio at level 6 with food in the digestion phase? The answer is the later. If you are burning calories while you digest and you add cardio to that, then you will undoubtably be burning more calories than if you had an empty stomach.

Im not talking about the paper certs (i am one), im talking about the ones you get guys huge (DOGGCRAP, IA, ETC)

I don't see how you couldnt gain weight by doing cardio in the morning on an empty stomach with a shake.

But you found what works for you and thats definately good/awesome. Lots of people fnd success inc ardio in the morning on an empty stomach though

I didn't say you couldn't gain weight if you had a shake. What I was saying is that people believe that this will help them burn more fat and that just isn't true. Fat loss is based on calories in vs calories out. What 'can' hinder weight gain is the fact that training on an empty stomach 'can' cause the body to rob the muscles on their stored amino acids. I didn't say this was a 100% fact for all humans, but this is how the body works. Someone on a lot of gear, or on a high cal diet, would not suffer from training in the morning on an empty stomach. One reason being, the late breakfast time will prolong the starting of their metabolic stimulation. My primary position was it's effect on weight loss, not weight gain. You can always eat more to achieve weight gain.

I think we are misunderstanding each other. LOL

Re: Cardio in the morning on an empty stomach?

I am not reading all that but I will offer my insight based off of personal experience.

I used to do cardio in the A.M. (can't now due to time constraints) and I had NO problem with muscle loss. It wasn't technically on an empty stomach, it was with 40 grams of whey in water right before cardio while still at home. The key is intensity. A good majority of people OVERDO cardio. We are not looking to run or be strenuous with this, we want fat loss not speed or endurance capabilities. I put the treadmill on a incline of 9-11 and cycled speeds of 3.0 - 3.5 (which was a brisk pace, but not jogging). If I wanted a change of pace I went to the stair climber and put it on "Fat Burner" and let it do its magic.

I only did cardio for 35 - 45 minutes at a time. I lost fat, I got stronger. Nothing much more to it. People make things more complicated than what it need be.

Re: Cardio in the morning on an empty stomach?

I did cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (no shake or anythig else) and did not notice anything special in regards to losing more fat. It was the same as if I did it in the afternoons around 6pm after work. This is just me though.

Re: Cardio in the morning on an empty stomach?

IMO it is the best thing to do ( cardio on an empty stomach) because of the state in which your body is at in the morning. When the body is depleted of glycogen stores the body will use fat as an energy source.

ive had the conception for years that it was more effective to do cardio on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. Do you guys think its because it kick starts ur metabolism? what are your thoughts on this?

It's not so much that it kick starts your metabolism, but rather the fuel that the body will use for energy.

IMO if you are looking to reduce bodyfat you should concentrate heavily on maintaining the proper diet and actually do as little cardio as possible. Obviously it will depend on the individual body type. My opinion

You will start to burn fat after 20minutes at your MHR, so what i do is warmup on a treadmill at a moderate pace for 20minutes then start my weight training. As far as burning the fat on an empty stomach, i say "humbug", lol! If i start on an empty stomach, then i have too eat, then wait the proper time to digest, hell the whole workout process will take forever, lol. I don't know about you but my time is very important. My moto is minimal time maximum results.
