What are your opinions on drinking while on cycle? My buddy drinks 3 or 4 nights a week while he is on. Is this hurting his gains? Their are no orals in his cycle!

Sounds like a terrible idea. Some can handle that lifestyle, some cannot. I am one that falls into the latter category.

If you're drinking 3-4 nights a week regardless if you're on or off is a bad idea.

        Re: Alcohol

To answer your question concerning your buddy, and if drinking 3-4 nights a week is hurting his gains; that is a big YES. Alcohol most definitely hinders gains...in a big way. Then again, I don't think a few beers here and there is a big deal, but I know that it's like I negate a weeks worth of training in one night if I really do some heavy drinking.

When I was just getting interested in training in my late teens, I would go over to an older uncle's (by marriage) place and workout in his garage. He had a garage full of equipment, and he was a powerlifter back in his prime. He passed away several years back. He was an old timer. But he swore by Guinness. He said that was part of his daily regimen. He claimed a good stout beer would make you stronger. But anyway, to each his own. I guess what I'm trying to say is that in moderation, I don't think a few beers here and there will hurt much, if any. Now really throwing back some alcohol will set you back. Not to mention the added stress on the ole liver.

          Re: Alcohol

When I drank I always had good gains while on maybe if I didnt drink I would of had better but who knows. I can see he wouldnt have good gains because of being hung over and not eating, not getting enough sleep those factors. But I still took in my calories and all my natural supplements also. So who really knows. But I will say this if he is drinking 4 nights a week there might be a problem coming his way.

What are his goals? Just to go out and abuse himself and pray on women at the local bars? There are differences imho. You, as a friend need to access that and gauge your friendship accordingly

I'm 43, been training since 16 and cycling for the past 8 years. I enjoy coming home from work and winding down to 3-4 JD's with a splash of water. I know it is no excuse but my position is quite stressfull and i find that the alcohol allows me to relax. Outside the alcohol, keep in mind, I maintain a very strict diet, excersise and rest regimen. You may be right in that I could be making better gains if the alcohol wasn't in the picture. However, I have been not been in better shape since my mid thirties.

Alcohol definitly effect gains. Reduction in protein synthesis, additional useless calories...
Does anyone else use ghb in place of alcohol? I do and I must admit, if I didn't have it, I might wind up drinking 3 nights a week. Now I only drink one night and limit it to 3 or 4 drinks but without ghb, I might be tempted to drink more... For example, tonight I'm going out with the guys and I'll have a steak and some food but no drinks because tomorrow is superbowl sunday and I'll be boozin then. Tonight I'll have some g on me in case I'm tempted to drink.

What experience do you have with it that you would say such a thing?

killed me twice. I was pretty excessive with it though. I'd forget I just took a cap 10 minutes ago and just be feeling good and dose up again. I was young, very stupid, reckless, immature, and somewhat didn't care back then either. If taken responsibly, it's harmless. There's just that fine line, little dab'l-do-ya factor. It's all about resposibility with that stuff. I wasn't responsible at all with it in those days.
