  • How much protein is too much?

The way I have my diet figured, I am getting 230g. I weigh 182lbs with about 22%BF(measured by me with a caliper). So, that is around 140lb of LBM. 1.5g per LBM puts me about 210g. Here are the macros for my day:

    Calories: 1866
    Fat: 62.3
    Carbs: 89.3
    Protein: 230.2

I am trying to lose BF.

Cool. I read somewhere too much protein is hard on the kidneys. I think I may actually be on to something with my diet!! We will see. If I can lose 1.5lbs per week, then I will reach my goal by vacation. Then I can start a clean bulk!!!

Just make sure you drink enough water and you should be okay with the protein.

i personally don't believe high protein diets can harm you. i know i've read things here and there that lead me to feel this way but i can't remember the links or complete details. however, i did a fast search and found this little bit...

Can high protein diets damage you kidneys?
This is often the chief argument by the uninformed regarding high protein diets. It all goes back to some early studies done on renal patients. For those of you that don’t know, we’re talking about people whose have kidney disease and whose kidneys are already failing. In these studies it was found that too much protein puts undue stress on the kidneys in renal patients with a subsequent loss of normal kidney function.

There are no studies showing this same link to people with normal kidney function, in fact to my knowledge, all studies have shown the kidneys to function just fine on high protein diets. Protein does require processing by the kidneys, but in healthy adults the kidneys only function at 25% capacity, so extra load is more than tolerable

Good info CTRL. I didn't think protein could hurt you. I've never even heard the kidney thing, but I know for a fact that you can't get too much protein. as in, to hurt...it just works like "too much fiber" when you really dig in.

I think you got yourself a nice looking lay-out tn94z.

I try to get at least a gallon a day now. I usually get almost a gallon just while at the gym....big change from last year. I couldn't stand to drink plain water, now it's about all I drink.

My stats are listed above. Basically my plan is just to eat clean with a calorie deficit, and get enough protein to try not to lose much muscle, but I know I will lose some.

Well, I plan on (just started last night) doing cardio Mon, Tue, Sat and Sun, which is about the only time I have. I may do some HIIT in the afternoons after work when it warms up. Last night I walked at an incline of 4 at 4mph for 60 minutes! I am feeling it today too!! But I plan on doing that at least 4 days a week.

I don't really know yet! I am not really familiar with what a body looks like at x% BF, so I may just play that by ear. My goal is to drop about 15-20lbs. I weigh 182 and I think that if I can get down to about 160-165, then whatever BF that ends up being will be where I want to be....hopefully. It would be cool to get down low enough to see some ab definition and then start bulking. I don't want to get too big but if I can cut down and then do a good clean bulk back to my weight now, I would be happy as hell!!

i don't think there is such a thing as to much protein. Now the higher the protein the more water you need to drink and more fiber you need to take in but too much is silly in my opinion. It looks like you got a good plan going man. I am cutting to so stay strong and keep up the good work. To be honest i would say you could even up your protein by 50 grams or so and bring your carbs up about 30 grams also. I use to be a strong believer in real low carb diets but i have found that if you keep them around 150 or so that you feel better and still get great results as long as you are eating low GI carbs and getting after it in the gym and cardio.

Really? I had about 50g more originally but I backed it off a bit. I may gradually add it back in. Thanks man! I had to re-calibrate the eating because I haven't lost any weight recently, so maybe this one will do the trick. I would like to get this done by the first of June when we go to the beach, but I don't know. That would average out to about 1.5lbs per week.

what i like to do is eat maintenance calories and control my weight loss with my cardio. This seems to work really well for me.

Yeah, I don't like cardio so I was trying to lose with a calorie deficit...lol! Whatever works now though. How did you figure up your maintenance? I went by a formula on here and it came out to 2991 and then I originally dropped 500 below that and didn't see a whole lot of results, so then I came up with this one.

It could be that I just started lifting again in October and the "newb" muscle gain has canceled out any fat loss, I don't know.

thats very possible that that could be happening. To be honest to come up with my maintenance level i used a very unscientific approach. I set up a meal plan thought i though was pretty reasonable. then i started on it. I was working out with no cardio. Each week i weighed. If i lost more than about 1 pound i adjusted the diet up a little. If i gained mroe than about 1 pound i adjusted down a little. ONce i got where i was holding pretty stable with nothing but lifting i started my cardio. I do 30 min of HIIT on the eleptical about 4 days a week and let me tell you the fat has really started to melt off. I have been very happy with my results.
