  • WATCH: Spotting 101 — The Squat

After seeing some of the recent debate and frustration after the IPF Raw World Championships regarding spotting, I realized that this is a topic that is rarely discussed, almost as if it's just something that everyone knows. Spotting is a very important aspect of training, as it ensures not only the lifter's safely, but also—when done correctly—the spotter's safety.
For spotting the squat, here are a few of the most important points:

Use your leverages to your advantage with a wide stance/base of support.
    Stay close.
Make sure both sides of the bar are loaded evenly.
When spotting from the side, surround the weight and keep the sleeve of the bar close to crease of your elbow.
When spotting from the rear, have your hands under the arms of the lifter.

Great post and your right it's rarely talked about. Correct spotting is invaluable or not only do you screw everything up but you or the lifter can be really hurt.

It's so rare to come across a good spotter nowadays, especially with squats. I rarely ask anyone in the gym for a spot unless it's someone I've trained with frequently and trust.

Yeah finding someone who can spot is rare. If I'm at that point now days I trust having an escape plan more than the guys at the gym. Its a real shame it makes it impossible to do force reps or negatives. My fault I guess I have ZERO tolerance for teaching how to spot me in the middle of a workout.
