Junior Dos Santos confirms UFC 117 meeting with Roy Nelson
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on May 23, 2010 at 9:55 am ET
As expected Junior Dos Santos (11-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will meet fellow heavyweight contender Roy Nelson (15-4 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in August at UFC 117.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported the main-card fight earlier this month, and Dos Santos recently confirmed the matchup with "The Ultimate Fighter 10" winner via Twitter.
UFC 117 takes place Aug. 7 at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif. A middleweight title match between champion Anderson Silva and challenger Chael Sonnen headlines the pay-per-view show.
Nelson originally was slated to fight Cheick Kongo at UFC 116, but the French striker pulled out of the bout with a back injury.
The 25-year-old Dos Santos enters the fight with six consecutive victories, five of which have come in the UFC. Most recently he fought at UFC on Versus 1 and knocked out former contender Gabriel Gonzaga in less than four minutes. Of Dos Santos' 11 career wins, only one opponent made it out of the first round: Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, who verbally submitted to the Brazilian in the third round of their UFC 103 matchup.
In addition to Gonzaga and Filipovic, Dos Santos has stopped Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve and Gilbert Yvel in the octagon.
Nelson, 33, racked up his second consecutive octagon victory with a beatdown of 6-foot-11 Struve at UFC Fight Night 21 in March. The former IFL champ bucked most predictions by quickly getting inside on Struve and knocking him out with a right hand in just 33 seconds.
Previously, Nelson topped the "TUF 10" field, including an opening-round win over Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson, and won the show's championship with a finale knockout of Brendan Schaub live on Spike TV.
