I didn't see the fight. But from the sounds of it, Shogun took it to Machida? No freakin way? Even though Machida won, Shogun actually hung 5 rounds with him? I didn't think he could do it. Props to Shogun.

Yeah, Shogun is no joke. The problem is the fight was close. Joe Rogan and Golberg were being a little biased toward Shogun and that made it seem like Machida wasn't doing anything. Machida pretty much countered every time Shogun landed a strike. But the announcers never mentioned it. The judges saw it though. Shogun is one of my favorite fighters of all time and I hated to see him lose, but I think that was the right call. I mean all 3 judges saw it that way.

And to say they were "payed" off would be silly. Dana would have made A LOT more money if Machida would have lost because that would have set up an Anderson vs Shogun fight. I think Dana (financially speaking) would have rather seen Shogun win. It was too close and everyone knows you have to be convincing when you are trying to beat a champ.

I'm not the only one who thought that. Did you hear all the boo's in the crowd.Lets face it machida fought rashaad who wasnt all that anyway. His record was way better then the fighters he fought.

The Machida Era isn't going to be quite as dominant as many thought. There's another Brazilian who can hang with him, but he just didn't get the nod on this night. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua beat Lyoto Machida down with a bevy of leg kicks that helped keep Machida off balance but Machida, the UFC light heavyweight champ, retained his belt via unanimous decision (48-47 on all cards). The crowd didn't like it, and many across press row had it the other way. That said, it wasn't a robbery. Rounds two, three and four were razor thin and very difficult to score. Cagewriter had it 48-47 for Rua giving Shogun rounds one, four and five.
Machida was slow to raise his hands when the fight ended. He looked a bit surprised when he was announced as the winner. Even his manager, Ed Soares, gestured as if he were wiping the sweat from his brow as he walked past press row.
"Whenever he wants, I try again. No problem," Machida said as the crowd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles voiced its displeasure.

I really like both guys with Shogun being my favorite. I don't really have an argument here because the fight was so close that I was happy with either fighter winning.

I thought that Shogun landed more leg kicks but the problem with that is that so many guys throw leg kicks just because they are loud and make it sound like they are doing something, that I think leg kicks score less in the judges eyes. The punches were even. Machida landed a ton more knees though. He stuffed some TD attempts. He landed some power shots too. It was just close, and close usually goes to the champ.

I'll be honest, when the 5th round was done, I thought Shogun was going to win. But like I said earlier, a champion has the edge before the fight ever begins. It has been this way for years and years in MMA and boxing. That is why they say you just about have to stop a champion to beat them. It sucks, but that's the way it has been.

But in the end, Machida won and there is nothing we can do about it. Look at the brightside....there will probably be an immediate rematch that will answer all of the questions!!

Another thing we need to think about is this was Machida's first title defense. That is the hardest fight in a fighter's career from what they say, so I think Machida did okay considering the pressure he was under.

I saw it like this:

Machida won round 3 for sure. Shogun won rounds 4 and 5. Rounds 1 and 2 were close and could be a tossup. You have to take the title from the champ and I don't think that Shogun did enough to "take" the title from Machida. Machida also didn't so a good job by allowing it to go to a decision either.

i owuld have gave the fight to shogun.... the problem is u have to beat the champ the judges will usually side against the challenger. and i personally think the ufc has terrible judges.
