  • Nogueira blames self for loss

Widely considered as one of the best heavyweight fighters today, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira tasted his first defeat in the Octagon last weekend. Frank Mir, a heavy underdog, claimed the UFC interim title with a TKO stoppage over the former Pride heavyweight champion.

“Yeah, really bad night tonight,” commented Nogueira to MMAWeekly.com about his performance. “Frank Mir was in great shape. He surprised me with stand-up. He threw a very strong uppercut in the first round. He moved better than me.

“Everybody could see that I wasn’t a good fighter tonight. I didn’t fight well. I think I can fight much better than this.”

Mir startled Nogueira with his improved striking and put his Brazilian counterpart on the mat in the first round.

“He surprised me how good he was standing up, for sure,” explained Nogueira. “I thought he was going to try and bring the fight to the ground; I was going to fight standing up. It was a great fight for him though.

“I’ve had better performances than this. I need to get into better shape. I have a few injuries coming into this fight; I hurt my left knee very bad. I couldn’t get there; the right shape. Every fight is a different story.”

At the post-fight press conference, Nogueira was asked if he’d be interested in a possible fight with former champion Randy Couture.

“For sure I would accept this fight. He’s a great fighter. He just lost his last match, but he’s still a legend in this sport. I would love to fight him. We’re both very experienced fighters and it would be a nice match.”

Nogueira intends to return to his family in Brazil and take some time off before resuming his training.
I agree that he definately didn't look like himself, but it would have been a tough fight regardless considering how good Mir looked.

HE LOOKED SO SLOW IT WAS PATHETIC. IVE NEVER SEEN HIM JUST NOT MOVE LIKE HE DID THIS TIME.

MIR WAS DEFINITELY ON HIS GAME THIS NIGHT

As stated by Mir, "Lesnar will NEVER beat me.!!"

I don't think Lesnar will beat him. His only chance is in the stand up game and if Mir's standup gets better from where it was this weekend, then Lesnar won't win the standup. If it goes to the ground, Mir has some of the best BJJ in MMA. I just think it is Mir's title to take. The only way I see Brock winning is if Brock has a flurry while on the ground and the ref stops it quick. Other than that, i see Mir taking it again.

brock is getting better all the time also so I hope they do fight again.doesnt anyone give brock credit for beating randy. randy has all the skills and imo way better then mir and brock won. since brock is the new face it seems everyone is against him and cant win but he has proven that he can win.and nog was way out of shape and took mir to lightly

I give him all the credit in the world for beating Randy. The thing is Randy's standup is not as good as Mir's was last weekend. Randy is no where near as good as Mir in the BJJ game. Mir has better Muay Thai with a background in Karate. Randy is smaller than both and not as strong. The only thing Randy really has over Mir is experience and wrestling. Nog didn't really take Mir lightly...he just was prepared for Mir's progression. Mir was ALOT more technical and ALOT more prepared for this fight than anyone imagined he would be. He actually trained like he is supposed to. He is one of the guys that has been bashed about his work ethic in the past and Mir says that it was because he let his ego get in the way. He has changed all that now and trains the correct way. The change showed. I believe that Mir is a different fighter now and Nog is just getting older. It's nothing new. The sport is just evolving...for example, Chuck, Nog, Randy, Hughes, Wandy, etc...These guys are really getting too old to change their style that much. Nog isn't the only one that made Nog look like that. Sylvia was beating the hell out of him until he got the choke. Sapp was beating the hell out of him until Nog caught him. CroCop was beating the hell out of him until Nog caught the arm bar. He has just been able to survive long enough to work his BJJ. Mir didn't play that game and he won. Nog has just taken too many bad beatings in my opinion. There is only so much your body can take.

Mir will be fighting Brock next. There is no doubt that they are fighting. They must combine the HW belts. Mir has the interim title and Brock has the title.

Re: Nogueira blames self for loss

Brock's standup is by no means better than Mir's. Brock has reach and punches straight down the pipe, but to say that his standup is better than Mir's is just ridiculous in my mind. Mir's has better head movement, more than one type of punch, kicks, muay thai clinch, karate, etc... Brock's biggest strength in his stand up is his reach and that is it. Nog looked like shit because Mir was so much better. Nog looked worse than usual, but he didn't look that much off what he usually is. Nog would have looked alot better if he had fought someone less talented. Nog said himself that he Mir came out better than he thought he would.

Oh and Brock did put Mir on his ass....which put Brock in Mir's world....which in turn put Brock in a heel hook and lost the fight. So, if you think about it....if Brock's standup is so much better, he should have just stayed up instead of jumping down on top of a black belt in BJJ.

And I hate to break it to you man, but Brock is the champ because he fought a much smaller 50 year old man. I mean come one...the guy got the belt before Mir got a shot and Mir beat him in his last fight...how dumb is that? Mir beat him 2 fights ago and now he has to beat him again for the belt, come on.

agree 100% not to mention nog should have fought randy not lesnar.

they need to split the HW division. a 220# guy fighting a 280# guy (brock cuts to meet the 265# max) is not a fair fight in which skill is the key factor and not just size and strength

                            205# - 240# and 240# - up

its just like uriah faber fighting rampage its stupid
