  • Mom makes me feel guilty.

It's not her fault. She doesn't mean to.

About 4 years ago my parents decided to get divorced. I was 1/2 way through college, and about to move to Vancouver for a year to get my "Technical Experience".

When I got back, the divorce was pretty much finalized. My mom was left with 1/2 of a $250,000 house (125,000 morgage), her truck, and a $12/hr job.

Things were hard on all of us. My parents had paid my college tuition and bought my textbooks in the past and I paid all the rest of my expenses myself. Mom could no longer afford 1/2 of that, and I couldn't ask Dad to pay 1/2 and not mom. So I ended up getting a job at McDonalds to pay my way through school.

SO...4 years later... I'm done college and have a good paying job. I easily make more than double her income. BUT.. mom is still in the same boat.... struggleing to get by.

Mom loves 2 things in her life.. her children and her horses. She's talking about giving the horses up.. they're expensive. I CANNOT let that happen. But I don't know what to do. She won't let me help out financially. She knows I'm saving money to buy a house of my own and won't let me give her anything.

The only way I've been able to help is with doing labour etc. Last summer I took the truck into the bush every other weekend and brought her back about 5 full loads of firewood so she could save money in heating costs over the winter. I also helped her plant a large garden so that she could save some money in groceries and I believe she even made a few hundred dollars selling vegetables. Unfortunately, this isn't enough.

Any ideas guys? She'll know it's me if she suddenly finds a bunch of money laying around or something like that. She's the type of lady who'd try to find it's proper owner anyway, no matter how badly she needs it. Last Christmas I bought her a computer. Nothing special, just a $1000 starter system. The stubborn women RETURNED IT ON ME! Got my CC bill the next month with a $1000 credit on it. S'OK.. I straightened things out and made it so she couldn't return it again.

This shit is tearing me up guys. She loves those horses.. doesn't stop talking about horses... has horse stuff all over her house...

My mother is my role model when it comes to "THe person I want to be". Well, in male form of course

She's the best person I know.. and I'm not just saying that cause I'm biased. My mom is an amazing stand up lady. One of those people who is always friendly and nice.. one of those people that EVERYONE likes. Her only fault is that sometimes she's too nice when she really should be standing up for herself. As you can imagine, my brother and I are VERY protective of her. There's nothing I wouldn't do for her.

njjuicer - I wish I could bro. I've dug my own grave in that aspect. I've been pushing her to let me give her some money now for a while. She won't budge and if she suddenly finds some, she'll know where it came from in a heartbeat. Shoulda just kept my mouth shut.

Anyone know a good scheme for faking a lottery winning or something like that? Well maybe a contest entry or sumptin.. darn lady doesn't gable or buy lottery tickets...can't afford it.

That was very noble of you Saturn, you sound like a great bro. It's weird when you get into a situation where your parents need your assistance. Being 24yo, I'm still used to it being the other way around from my childhood.

njjuicer - That's a pretty good idea bro, cept she already owns 2 horses. The problem is the cost of keeping them. The damn things are expensive. She's got to have them shoed twice a year at $500 a pop. $700 last winter for hay. Vet bills, meds,... it adds up fast.

I just remembered mothers day is coming up. I wonder if I could talk to her ferrier (horse shoe guy) and pay in advance for the horses next set of shoes...(no refunds allowed). Problem is that I don't know how to get ahold of him and mom's gonna know something is up if I ask.

                    She is great.

She's got 2 horses and 2 acres of land. She boards them herself, but there isn't enough land for them to graze properly so she has to suppliment their diet with hay. Once a month I use the truck to transport the horses to my grandparents house where there's more grass so she doesn't have to buy as much hay.
