I have a suggestion, instead of platinum use white gold its cheaper and platinum tarnishes really fast. With white gold it doesn't look bad and it looks just like platinum. My fiance wanted a princess cut diamond too, i suggest you look for a diamond wholesaler they cut out the middle man. I purchased my girls ring for 4300 Canadian. it is a regular thick white gold band, 1 carat princess cut.... Clarity SI-1, Colour is J and cut is medium. The only way you can tell that there is a slight flaw is if you take a jewellers eye piece and look at the diamond it cannot be seen with the naked eye. I say go for size because no one when they see a ring comments on how nice the cut or clarity they just see the size. I wouldn't go through the internet i like to see what i'm getting like i said find a jewellery - diamond wholsesaler you will get a better deal. My girls diamond was purchased for 4300 CDN and it was appraised for 10,7000 CDN. Just my 2 cents.

i wouldn't get white gold... platinum is stronger and won't dent as easily as white gold. my friends who have platinum settings haven't had it tarnish... i have a few rings which are white gold and they get scratched up and dented easily. if it's an engagement ring, she's gonna be wearing it all the time, platinum is much more durable.

          just my $0.02

i would always go platinum ... it'll last much longer, and 10 years from now it'll just look like a better ring.

Just get a 1 carat princess cut solitare on a platinum setting. you should easily be able to get taht for 5k ....

the one i priced out was a 1.5 carat princess cut in the center and 3/4 carat princess cuts on either side with an antique platinum setting.

I have two basic thoughts.... either a solitare with mid range stats, so i casn get a large rock...... maybe 1.25 - 1.5 Ct with platnum setting....

or a smaller center rock with side baguetts.... platnum setting

im not too well off right now, and I am moving this summer, so money is a bit of a concern. But if im going to do it, i want to do it right. i want something that will catch the eye.. that is why im leaning toward the larger solitare......

              any feedback would be great.........

last time I WAS engaged, I bought her a 1.1ct platinum setting. With a VS1 inclusion, D of a color and it costed me $7,400.00...yep, it was really nice

my big concern is... I am moving in 3 months, with no job lined up... all my money i have now, i will need for morgage and bills, It might be hard to add on an extra 200 a month for a ring payment
                  ..

i have my mothers diamond... I wonder if i could trade it in against what i want?

if you have your mother's diamond, why don't you set that? it can be an heirloom piece and you can start passing it down through your family. sentimental value is significantly higher and more important. there are a lot of very beautiful "estate" settings they have now on the market that have that victorian look which are beautiful. if in the future you have the ability to buy her a bigger diamond, buy her an anniversary ring with a larger stone.

trust me, if she loves you, the size of the rock you buy her isn't gonna matter that much, especially if you're in shaky waters with a job and trying to buy a house.

from what i understand, there's not a real secondary market for diamonds, so you're right... you probably won't get much for it. BUT you can make it into a pendant and give it to her as a wedding present. a pear shaped diamond would make a beautiful drop pendant

ebay has great prices on diamonds ... it sounds weird, but they're a good price and are GIA or EGL certified ...

you could always talk to auriflex ... he's the man to ask
