  • pocket knives, lets discuss

    lets talk about them.

i carry a spyderco endura IIII 90% of the time. 1/2 serated/plain (wish it was a plain blade) It is VG10 steel and holds an edge like no other I have seen. it is my fav by far. light and strong. i love it.

i also have a ontario RAT folder which i like but is heavy. AUS-8 steel which is pretty damn good. better than 440 stainless IMO. plain blade

my smaller knives are my CRKT badger and landshark. 440 stainless knives but they are small and not for heavy work. both plane blades

i want a benchmade megumi with the wood and carbon fiber handle but they are about $200

so what do you carry? what type of blade do you prefer? big or small blades?

I currently do not carry a knife however have thought about it frequently and, even the thought, drives my wife crazy against it. Really wouldn't mind doing so and would prefer something light and strong. you mention that spyderco endura IIII and i'll take a look into that. I'm sure there are state regs on the size of knives your able to carry, if any at all. Would need to look into NJ

I HAVE A GERBER SMALL DROP POINT LOCK BLADE...I MEAN THE BLADE IS 2.5 INCHES. IVE ALWAYS CARRIED IT IN MY POCKET. WHAT PISSED ME OFF WAS THE ATLANTA AIRPORT TOOK IT FROM ME AND WOULDNT GIVE IT BACK AS I WENT THROUGH SECURITY. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH A 2.5 INCH BLADE? TALK ABOUT PISSING YOU OFF!!!

a master never tells his secrets! lol OK since you are a fellow texan here goes!

i use just about any kind of metal i can find! if its a show knife, any metal will do that grinds and looks good since not woried about it being sharp. for a good working/hunting knife, I use corwy y or x, 440c, 1084, cpins-35vn, files, alabama damascus, and so on.

you can heat by making your own forge out of a fish fyer or a bbq pit, just heat your blade/blank to 1350-1450 and leave it about 4 min after red hot ( red hot would be when a magnet wont stick to it). pull it out and wait till you see no red on the metal and then dip it in old motor or canola oil and leave about an hour, wash off and grind on my brother. this works better than leaving in ash over night and will make a better knife.

when done, heat back up same way, dip and then place on cookie sheet and put in your oven for an hour on 500 and then let cool at least 5 hours, heat again in oven at 500 for hour and cool again. then one more time after cooling 5 hours 400 for hour and then let cool 24 hours. then polish or work handle and polish.

if you get the whole blade red hot and magnet wont stick you are hot enough, you do not have to know what temp you are at. this happens between 1350-1450
