Re: Any fence builders in here??

One more question....the way my house is layed out and the way the pool concrete is layed out, my dimension come out to 50' on the east run, 82' on the long run, and 45' on the west run. What I was thinking was setting the posts at 8ft apart until I got to 40' out from the house (on the east run as an example) and then spacing them out 5' for the next two. Otherwise I would come having 2' between the last 2 posts. Does that make sense and if so, am I thinking correctly? I just want to make sure this won't cause some issue that I am not thinking about.

Re: Any fence builders in here??

So I set my four corner posts yesterday and I got a new question. I have always heard that you can't put new concrete on top of old concrete because of the bonding issue. I ran out of concrete with one of my holes maybe half way full. Will it do any good to add concrete in the hole to fill it the rest of the way up? Or would that just be a waste? It is on one of my 10ft poles where there will be dirt filled in that area.

THERES NOT THAT MUCH OF A LOAD ON IT- ITS NOT STRUCTURAL. SO YOU ARE PROBABLY FINE. JUST FINISH FILLING THE HOLE WITH THE NEW CONC.

Okay, that's what I was hoping. Doing that will make me feel better about them. Now as soon as my dad does his dirt work, I will finish it up. Thanks again for all of the help. I'll post up some pictures once I get done with it.

Re: Any fence builders in here??

Excellent to hear youre off and running tnz.
Last saturday I went out and put up 10 feet of fence in a couple hours. My first fence ever. I used the visuals 02 posted here.
First I took wire cutters and cut down the field fence. Then I had to dig out a bunch of T-posts. Then I dug post holes 4 feet deep with a post hole digger. That was an awesome workout. I loved it. Then put my 4x4s in the ground. Funny thing was, I had the string to get my posts lined up just right, but lost it. I actually buried the string by accident when I was digging holes. So I improvised without any string, and just put a long 2x4 along the ground where I wanted my fence and set my posts along that 2x4 LOL..It was ridiculously easy. Everything lined up just right, I used an impact driver and was putting pickets up as fast as I could stand them up . I really like using the impact driver to drive screws into the fence. It is super fast.
I look at that fence and am amazed at what I did all by myself LOL...Now I cant wait for the next section I put up. It will be even better. The recent fence was on the backside of my property where it really isnt seen close up, the next section will be near the front of the house where everyone will see it. So I will be much better on the next fence! I got some great practice and now I know I can do it , no problem. Oh btw, for the concrete, I didnt use water, I mixed dry quickcrete with the dirt and tamped it down really super tight.(that was a tip from some old timer fence builder I talked to) Those posts were in tight and you couldnt budge them. We got alot of rain later on. So no, I didnt set my posts in wet concrete and wait a day like they told me at Home depot. Its done. Then you want to go outside and stand there staring in amazement at the fence you built...LOL Thanks everybody! I did it!

Great job! Yeah, it's a helluva workout. My shoulders were on fire! I added water with my concrete and mixed it before putting it in. I wasn't in a big hurry to start the fence so time was no issue. They should have plenty of time to set up before I start adding fence boards. I don't know if I'll get started on the other posts this weekend or not as they are calling for rain. I have a 4 day weekend coming up so I'll at least get the posts set then. After that, I am at a stand still until my dad gets done. I don't want to put the horizontal boards or fence boards up until he does his dirt work because they will obviously be in the way. It's amazing how hard it is for me to get him over to my house to work....and I am his son!! He just stays so busy and is usually stuck working by himself.

I went out this morning and measured the length of the fence I put up and its actually 24 feet, not 10. LOL...I didnt measure the distance when I did it because I was filling in a big gap in the old privacy fence that my horses destroyed.

New question. Would you go for the cedar board instead of just the treated board? It's obviously higher but at regular price it would only be about 150.00 more to have cedar. Is it worth that to get the longer life out of it? Do you have to do cedar 2x4s as well when you go that route?

Well, I got my horizontal boards up this week. Not it is time to pick out what fence boards we want and get them up. I still haven't decided on those yet. Cedar is so much higher....is it really worth the price difference?

Man, I gotta tell ya, getting that fence up has been so fantastic! Usually, the house across from my corn field could see right across the field into my back yard. It would take until july for the corn field to make a thick 8 foot fence. This year I didnt have to wait for the corn!!!LOL...I'll tell you, if that was a high school shop project, my grade would probably get a B- or a C, but hey, the fence is up, it is strong and we have had hellatious wind storms and those people over there cant see me in my back yard. Now if I want to take a leak, I take a leak. LOL

I bet! I can't wait to get ours finished. I don't figure it will be much longer once I pick out a board. I can tell just by what I have up now, that it's going to make a huge difference to our back yard. I'll post up so final pictures once I get done. I'll be buying the boards sometime this week so I can hopefully get started on them this weekend.
