try and hit up a big corporate gym. even if it doesnt pay shit... get your foot in the door get some experience and find out if you like personal training... look for a lifetime, xsport, l.a., cardinal, fitness 19, or 24 hour fitness.
most of the gyms around here require a 4 year degree that is related OR a major certification. also you need to be first aid and CPR certified as well. I had to provide proof of my certs before i was hired. Im in Chicagoland so things might be different nationally. Education and certs are expensive but I have found that it has never steered me wrong.
The best managers are the ones who work their way up. start on the floor as a trainer or facility worker... learn the ins and outs... then get bumped up... like an officer in the military who went to rotc then ocs... he doest get the same respect as an enlisted soldier who puts in for an ocs package... ya dig.
