Re: personal trainers?
I am a personal trainer part time... you can make anywhere between $12 and $50 dollars an hour depending what gym you are at, who u are, and what you know.
There are 2 certs that are considered the best.... for CPT... certified personal trainers.
NSCA or ACSM I went with National Strength and Conditioning Association. It was easy, I already knew how to study from college and I spent maybe and hour or 2 a day for close to 5 months. I knew a lot of the info from being around the gym and teaching some courses on nutrition and exercise science at my real job. I took an EMT-B course so the anatomy and physiology was already there.
My company picked up the cost but for the study materials and to register for the test it was about $600 and the cert is good for 4 years but you have to do continuing education hours to stay certified. YOu can also do advanced certifications like CSCS, but i would recommend having a degree in exercise science.
Some trainers make tons of cash some dont make shit. most gyms will give you a commission when you sell a training package so you can make a ton of money if you want to **** people over and be a scum bag.... thats not the way i work... i always sell the packages at the lowest i can go... but like i said i do it to help people not as a main source of income. If i was not making $60k plus at another job I might rethink my approach.
its like any industry there are trainers that are great and some that suck... I make good money at my gym because of being an NCAA athlete and working on the Physical training end for a private security company. I also look the part... the young girls want to flirt, the old women are lonely and want to talk oprah, and the young bucks want to be big and jacked ...Badasz1@Hushmail.com

Re: personal trainers?
You dont even need a cert. some of the best trainers I know dodnt even have a cert. some guyms may require a certain type certification. I have a CSCS and train part time and none of my clients even know what cscs means unless I tell them.lol...theres one guy that works as a trainer and hes got a big beer belly ,he nev er works out and he is booked up and he trains all kinds of people espcially figure competitors.. he just got a reputation as a good trainer and everyone wants to hire him even though he looks like shit himself..go figure!!! oh, plus, he doesnt know shit about diet or anything else. people just hire him to stand there and tell them off for not trainin hard. You wouldnt fukin believe it if you saw this guy. He works during the day as an auto mechanaic. no certification whatsoever..gawl

but she had exceptional people skills..she is rakin in the dough. Her clients simply love being around her so they pay pay pay. her clients get good resu.lts because they stay with her for years.
You can do it dave. Might be good to start out with a major chain gym because they will feed you clients. there are some certs that you can test online for nd they arent bad. NSCA cert can be taken at certain h and r block offices. ISSA is a good one too. you should go for it.

Re: personal trainers?
Well hellllllo boys.......glad I logged on tonight!
Okie dokie - here goes......I am in the midst of getting my certification. The state of Virginia only requires that there be ONE certified trainer on site. The head of our PT dept has the top 4 certifications so we are good to go for the time being. I, however, want to get my license just to have it. In terms of managing a gym. Wow - if only I knew then what i know now. Dont get me wrong - I LOVE my job, LOVE IT but its alot of work. Especially since we are 24 hours, getting decent staffing, keeping decent staffing, managing sales, keeping numbers up, keeping the gym clean, POS items, omg....I could go on and on. As for the money end of things, it really depends on the gym. We are a lower cost gym, $19.99 a month, $49 enrollment. I pay my trainers (without a certification mind you) $13 an hour. These are college kids who like the PT field but its not what they want to do for the rest of their lives. I can tell you personally, its easy to get burnt out. Yesterday I had 8 clients. Add that to all the paperwork and drama and it add up to a very, very long day. Plan on 12-14 hour days and your phone ringing at all hours. Now for the money end of things when it comes to managers, the money is good. Its not fabulous but when you love your job, the money isnt the biggest factor. I could go on and on. Dave - just lmk if you have any questions. Love you guys and miss ya!
