Rapper T.I. sentenced to year on weapons charges

Another dumb ass gang banger rapper going to jsil thinking he can beat the system and act like a thug at the time. he will do 6 months tops

ATLANTA – Rapper T.I. was sentenced Friday to one year and a day in prison after pleading guilty to federal weapons charges after he tried to buy a stash of machine guns and silencers to protect himself after his best friend was killed.

The 28-year-old rapper, whose real name is Clifford Harris, will also pay a $100,000 fine as part of his sentence. He was arrested in 2007 after trying to to buy unregistered machine guns and silencers.

He pleaded guilty last March to the federal weapons charges but wasn't sentenced until Friday as part of a deal to see if he would be successful in performing community service by speaking to youths about the pitfalls of drugs, violence and guns.

"Today, I would like to say thank you to some, and apologize to all," the rapper told U.S. District Judge Charles Pannell Jr., who handed down the sentence.

Harris went to buy the cache after his best friend, Philant Johnson, was killed following a post-performance party in Cincinnati in 2006. A man was found guilty last year in the murder case. Harris testified in that trial that he believed the bullets fired at his entourage were meant for him.

Harris ended up trying to buy weapons from undercover federal agents in a deal that was brokered through his bodyguard. He was arrested blocks from where he was to have headlined the BET Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta hours later.

He is supposed to report to prison sometime after May 19. He already has completed about 1,000 hours of community service and will need to complete 470 additional hours. He had faced a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.

"Everything I learned was through trial and error," Harris also told the judge. "I've learned lessons in my life to put in my music so people won't make the same mistakes as I."

At Friday's hearing, former United Nations Am****ador Andrew Young spoke on Harris' behalf.

"He's been able to do the work I've been trying to accomplish for so long in stopping violence in this country," Young told the judge.

Pannell said he was pleased with Harris' progress through his community service.

"I think this has been a great experiment," the judge said. "I hope this experience can lead to other experiments so others won't make the same mistake at all. I congratulate you."

Upon his release, Harris will be on probation for three years. He also will be credited for 305 days of home detention he already has served and must serve an additional 60 days, authorities said.

Harris agreed to community service to avoid a lengthy sentence. He already has made 262 public appearances — talking to youths at community centers, churches and schools — as part of that deal.

He also has taken part in a voting campaign to urge young adults to register to vote and had an MTV reality show, "Road to Redemption" to scare teens straight, but neither of those were credited toward the community service.

Harris is known as rap's self-proclaimed "King of the South." Through his healthy dose of confidence, he raps about the harsh realities of a street hustler's life.

Harris is one of the co-chief executives of Grand Hustle Records and one of Atlantic Records' most successful artists.

His sixth album, "Paper Trail," has sold nearly two million copies. It also charted two smash No. 1 songs, and a third with Justin Timberlake is near the top of the charts.

Im not a fan of the whole "thug life" street hustle whatever. But at the same time.....Even when you try to live a good life, sometimes when you become successful, people become envious, jealous, vindictive, etc.

Im not saying that whay T.I. did was right, because he is indeed a felon who by law cannot possess firearms, period....not just assault weapons. But these people live a life where at any time someone can try to gun you down. Whether your a rock star, rapper, country singer, athlete, actor.....there comes a point where your safety has to matter too.

He tried to puchase the firearms after his friend Philant Johnson was gunned down in a van. One of the other people hit was a memeber of his security staff. They were leaving a rowdy club scene to avoid trouble and people pursued them. Read the story.

From what I've heard out of TIP, he's been scared shytless, shakin in his shoes ever since his buddy got gunned down. TI is all of 5'6 a buck 15 soakin wet...not that size has anything to do with it, but I'd imagine when folks get shot up, hit and killed, and you know the killers are gunnin for you, you might wake up in in cold sweats, and possibly let your mind run away with you. just as TI said his did. I don't know. I've never been hunted, received death threats from real killers, or been in a vehicle while it gets shot up, and watch a friend die. Then know those cats are still abroad and waiting to catch me with my back turned. I can't speak for that man and his situation. I did hear him say he's spent $500k a year on security since the incident.

Good for him. He's trying to cover his true roots apologizing and speaking to kids. His new hit song with that fag Justin Timberlake sucks IMO.

I agree with a lot of what people say on these boards but not on this one. He watched his best friend die, people shooting at his van over nothing. T.I. has had security long before this started. He is not nor was not trying to be a "thug". like horspwr says, youve never been in those shoes. There are some things that come with fame, fearing for your life isnt one of them. Was Darrent Williams a thug because he was shot dead, was Phil Hartman a gangbanger because he was shot and killed. Because a guy is black, came from poverty where he may have had to do questionable things early in life, even CHOSE to do them doesnt mean that we cheer when the same guy...that contributes to charities and foundations and tries to walk the straight and narrow tries to protect himself after his best friend takes a bullet to the head in the seat in front of him.

T.I. is not one of those thug wannabe rappers. Too bad he wasn't smart enough to know he can't just purchase machine guns!

I listen to rap music and I don't know your definition of "thug wannabe rapper" as their are obviously a lot more rappers especially underground that are more either "street", "thug", "gang banger", etc (you pick your poison) but T.I. does rap about selling drugs and being associated with that lifestyle.

Either he is rapping about events in his life and a lifestyle he lived or he was a fraud and was rapping about things in his life that weren't true.

So either the past events in his life caught up to him, pretending to be somebody he wasn't, or possibly even trying to live up to his lyrics got him caught up as if you look into any of the successful commercial rap/hip-hop artists you hear on the radio 95% of the shit they rap about doing is either purely made up or taken from someone elses life.

Very rarely is there an artist today that is true to their lyrics...they sell themselves and pretend to be someone that they know will attract attention and record sales.

I mean look at some of the top names in commercial rap music today (in no particular order)

                      1) 50 Cent - snitch, fraud, and all around bull shitter. Has to resort to attacking other artists to sell records as his career is clearly in decline when Kanye West outsells him and he goes on record that he will retire if Kanye outsells him. Obviously he didn't live up to his word and his idea that he got shot b/c people in the street were jealous of him and his record deal is a joke. He got shot because he was a snitch anyone that has any commen sense and idea of what goes on knows he ratted.

                      2) Lil Wayne - pretend or recently claiming "Blood" gang but if you see earlier in his career he never flew the Red bandanna. Claiming to be a "gang banger" so late in his career should have been a death sentence for him but it is known that his brother is possibly being taken care of by the gang so I'm sure they worked somethign out but he was and never will be a true gang banger as he claims to be which should normally be an automatic ouster in hip hop but the white kids and main stream music love him so they lit him slide. Any other person that tried to pass themselves off as a Blood would be marked to be killed....I won't even get into the incident of him and his manager "Baby" getting caught kissing lip to lip open mouthed.

                      3) Kanye West - more hip hop but if this dude isn't on the "down low" then I need to readjust my radar but the dude is clearly at least batting for the hometeam and if he's lucky he might throw in a chick once in awhile. Obviously he is entitled to do as he see fits but how he portrays himself and his actions don't add up.

He has been caught lip synching on Saturday Night Live and American Idol recently and the majority of his music is his voice altered by a computer. When he started singing and then to top it off being caught lip synching it should of been career suicide but hip hop is so watered down that he still is around when there are tons of more talented and raw artists that are not getting the light of day...not to mention so egotistical. He has went as far to say he is the voice of this generation...lol Yeah ok.

                      4) T-Pain - this dude could possibly be the killer of hip hop as we know it today. Bringing that crap auto tune back around and being on everyone's tracks really doing nothing but allowing the computer to do the work is another indicator of what drives people to buy music today and it isn't talent. Then for other artists to buckle and get on that crap auto tune on their own tracks and sometimes more than half their album is this shit. WTF?!?!?

Some say he is the greatest hook guy of all time which in sales might be correct but true hip-hop fans know he is possibly the face of death to hip hop as we know it today.

Soulja Boy - clearly an innovater and talented young kid to do all his own tracks and production but what makes him popular (not so much today) was his ability to market himself online and thru mediums such as myspace, youtube, etc. His marketing, custom dance for every song, and his "ring tone rap" is clearly catchy for 10 seconds but it is another indicator of how sad the state of hip hop is today when someone can rap and repeat the same stupid as annoying lyrics over and over and then the radio stations beat it into your head. He was extremely popular when he first hit....his latest album was a dud thanks to him running his mouth about NAS killing hip hop (which couldn't be further from the truth) his music just sucks and isn't goign to have any longevity in the music industry. He has temporary star power hence the name ring tone rapper hardly anyone with any vocal/lyrical skills.

As I said I'm a fan of rap and hip-hop music but I have little to no respect for the majority of artists today, especially main stream artists as they aren't true to themselves and/or the music.

                          And alot of green pot
                          Compation in a range
                          Like he gotta be stop
                          Well maybe I will be
                          But probably not
                          Oh what the blood cloak
You try to knock em out and he sock

                          And I rather be dropped
                          Listen pops
Want to know a little more
                          About rap
                          Firts rule this is real
It aint just a record deal
                          Its a trap
                          [music continues]
I don't really have a definition for a thug wannabe rapper, I guess for me it's someone who always tries to act hard, like he's a gangster and will put a cap in somebody for disrespecting him. I guess the image of T.I. from listening to interviews he doesn't try to act hard like that. Anyways I don't listen to any of the crappy hip-hop that is out now days. I rather listen to Johann Sebastian Bach or Tchaikovsky then to listen to the garbage that's out now. Back in the 90's I listened to Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, Heltah-Skeltah, Biggy...etc.
