So in other words your saying that if you or anyone you know was killed it wouldn't matter how they were killed to you? Personally If I or anyone I know was going to be killed I would wish it was as quick and painless as possible. I think we should pass the same courtesy on to other living things. It's called having respect for nature.

i have many issues with japanese commercial fishing and it's pratices, from whaling, so sharking, and the slaughter of dolphins.

the fact is that they are slaughtering these animals for non-essential purposes. there may have been a use for whale blubber 50 years ago, but the manufacture of synthetic products emerged long ago to fill that gap.

and "shark fin soup"? gimme a break.

lets not forget that dolphins have brains that are larger than humans; the size of their brains is disproportionally large to the rest of their body. therefore they have the physical capacity in their brains to conceptualize, reason, and experience just as much as we do. it is really chilling to watch that video and see what they went through.

Like I said some predators kill their prey a lot more violenty. The law of nature is kill or be killed. Also when these animals get sick or become injured don't they just die painfully and slowly anyways?

The difference is most animals in nature don't have the ability to reason. Also with intelligence comes responsibility. So humans have no excuse to do things in such a malitious and violent nature. They could tone it down a bit.

That's another topic all together and a dead end one at that.

I won't post my true feelings on it because I'll probably offend a few people.

                      Re: Dolphin Massacre ***EXTREMELY GRAPHIC***

My take on it is this.... if you completely take out the whole "souls" part of things, in other words, the religious connotations that alot of you have brought up, it really comes down to a moral issue.... I hunt, & fish... I have chickens which I farm for both eggs and meat, I cut down trees for wood in the winter and grow a garden in the spring. It is survival. We never take more than we need, and we don't waste anything.

Klash brought up a very good point. Most of society is no longer the "hunter/gatherers" of old. We go to the store and buy our food off of a shelf, with no regard to what it took to get that food to the store and in a box.

I think humans relate more with other animals that are one of two things... either cute, or intelligent. Bugs for instance, disgust most of us, therefore, we kill them in huge numbers without even a thought.

Dolphins are both cute and intelligent, and have a mothering instinct that we relate to ourselves.... therefore, IMO, most people are outraged at even the thought of killing dolphins.

Does what I saw in the video disgust me??? undeniably yes.
It is a huge waste of life, they were obviously in pain, both physical and emotional, and the scene in which the child crossed right between the camera and the dolphins without even a glance spoke volumes about how the Japanese are completely emotionally detached from it.

                        Re: Dolphin Massacre ***EXTREMELY GRAPHIC***

What i find is it really isn't because the dolphin is killed and the manner that is upsetting, it is that they are only doing it for monetary purposes. It is not like there is a great demand for it, they are making it marketable. There are other Fish, not Mammals that are clearly sold much more for public consumption. It is the same when they (Chinese) will hunt down the black bear for its private parts, because they think there is some kind of power in eating what they make out of it. They will litteraly torture the bear to death and cut the part off and leave the rest of the bear to waste. They are also kept and bread for this purpose only, even tho they are endangered. Shark fins, another example. They harpoon the shark cut off the main dorsal fin and release the shark to an agonizing death, merely for the sake of what they can make out of the fin. Everything is about survival, but i question...Is this killing for survival or for only monetary purposes and for the hunt? I believe in hunting for survival, but we humans do not need to hunt for food, only for sport. The only hunting i agree with is for mass populations of animal (ie deer etc.) that would starve to death if populations weren't controled.

its a little grusome, but what slauter house isn't? I understand these are supposed to be highly intelegent creatures, but does that me dumb animals don't deserve to live while the smart ones do? what I see here is no different then killing a cow for its meat. I fail to see how the life of a dolphin is more important than a cow.

now if they where killing these animals for the heck of it and not consuming it would be a completely different story.
