Re: How deep in debt would you go for a Diamond

    Big Bump..
It shouldnt be about the ring my friend.. I get mad when i see these diamond
commercials and the dumb bastard spends big bucks for a rock.. My prob is,,
whats it take after that??A charge card with no limit??? I've been married for
15 years now and I have to say that I spent $1.100 dollars on a diamond wedding
ring for my wife.. No it wasnt a rock but She was happy just to have a ring.
and I was happy that it didnt put me to far into debt. She is worth it but
we had to look at the big picture.. Starting a marrage deeply in debt makes
    the relationship a hard one..
My point is that it shouldnt be about money.. If you love eachother the simplest
things should be the best..They are for us.. I wish you all the best bro.
    much respect,

Re: How deep in debt would you go for a Diamond

      Here's my feeling on it:
Me and Amy have hardly any debt whatsoever. So we are fortunate. I bought her close to a 2ct total wt ring. Again, we are fortunate that we didn't do much stupid spending when we were younger. If you are $40k in debt, that should be your very first priority to pay that off. If your girl REALLY loves you, I would talk about a very nice cubic zirconia ring for now. Believe me, NO ONE will know the difference. Not even a jeweler if they look at it without a scope. After you knock your debt down, then buy her a beautiful real ring. If people ask what happened to her old ring, tell them she lost it and insurance covered the cost of a new one. Simple as that. In the business I am in, I see people every day pile so much freaking debt up it's not funny. The WORST thing you can do is enter into a marriage with debt out your ass. The number 1 reason marriages end in divorce is financial reasons. So bite the bullet a little bit, and put the extra money you would spend on a ring into knocking the debt down. Then, you'll be sitting a lot easier when all is said and done. Trust me on this one. And best of luck!

That's very true. Imagine holding that kind of debt when a kid enters the picture. Those little suckers are cute as can be but they'll bleed you dry!!!!

I made a mistake of putting that 40K into this conversation. It seems to have gotten us off point. I appreciate the concern, but I am more intersted in what the average guy is paying for a ring. From this conversation and a few others I think I have narrowed down my choices and price range. I think I have even found a few good legitimate sources for the stone.

          Cheers

Re: How deep in debt would you go for a Diamond

Well, SE there is the thing about LOVE. Is she the type of girl that whats an expensive, large karat ring? Or is she the type that doesn't care just so she is engaged? It is the "IN" thing now to go with precious stone solitaries, such as, ruby, emerald, topaz etc with the wedding band being of plain gold or platinum. Then after say the 5th anniversary getting the solitarie replaced with a diamond. You can get a nice ruby or emerald for much less, but it is all in how you feel about it. I do know a gentleman that owns a jewelery store and three manufacturing facilities one in Miami, New York, and in Cali. If you are interested, what i did was tell him that i wanted the highest quality for the price in a one karat. I picked the diamond seperately and he searched for the best stone he could find to fit my price range. You also have to look at the symmetry of the diamond and where the stone is cut. Israel has some of the finest cutters. My wife has a D color in Vs1 quality with an invisible setting with baguettes diamonds surrounding it. It is up to you in what you want. He has designed rings for celebrities and pro atheletes so he knows his stuff. It is up to you, and in knowing her tastes. Oh, BTW congratulations!! Funny thing, i was just going to ask you if you were thinking about poping the question, lol.

Sorry, lol i didn't read all the above. SE i think DeBeers the leading diamond importer says three months salary is what one should pay for an engagement ring. I would say, though that most guys will end up spending more than that. Given you know what your gf likes go with that and try always to get the best quality for the $ your spending. Do you plan on total suprise or is she wanting to help in pick the ring. Many women would like to be able to pick the stye or cut of the stone.

There's no way I'd pay 10k for a ring. I don't know much about diamonds but the guy I got mine from does custom jewelry and claimed it would retail at around 7 but I got it for 3. He's a friend but I still think he was probably shooting me a line on the 7.

3 months salary? Bullshit! Maybe 2 weeks salary, but no way i would spend over 20k on a ring....i would be looking for a new wife first!

Lol, i seriously don't think that the average guy is paying 6-10k for an engagement ring. If so they are just plain stupid, over extending themselves or just trying to show off to other ppl. Unless they make 75-100k yr it would just be poor money management. I personally would go with a plain gold wedding band maybe 18K instead of the normal 14k, and get a very good qualitiy diamond solitare approimately 1 karat would be very nice. You can prob get a one karat E color which is only one step lower than D in a Vs2 grade which you wouldn't be able to see any inclusions with the naked eye, for around $3K maybe less. Oh, and it would come with EGL certification, so you have proof of its authenticity. Round diamonds show the highest refraction, which is the reflection of light. So i would personally go with that. Of course if you go with Marquise, Emerald, or Pear cut it is considered a Fancy cut and will cost more.
