For me.....I looked for one that would fold up so it wouldn't take up a lot of space and one that felt sturdy and smooth. So many of those home gym pieces of equipment that are reasonable in price are kinda wobbly. I tried out some to the eliptical machines at Big 5 and they were terrible.

My advice: Go to your gym and "try out" the diff ones. Pick a favorite. Buy the same make and model.

Spend the extra cash and you'll actually use it! You'll hate yourself for being cheap on this one!

Have you ever lived in the pacific northwest? It rains almost every day all winter long.

When I shopped for mine found best bargain new at Oshmans, can't remember name off hand. 750 on sale.

Like someone said, get a very sturdy one if you intend to use it, otherwise you will beat the crap out of it, running walking, jogging, etc, also it you get a flimsy one it will be noisy and annoying as all get out.

Also, you can look for used ones in the paper or e-bay, especially if you know model number.

all in all QUALITY ALWAYS COSTS LESS

                    Good Luck

Also...go to a place that specializes in that stuff and make him give you a better price. Know that all retail sales have A. an asking price...B. whats called a par price where they still make a ton of money, and then C. a price where they can usually take 10-20% off the par price. Don't buckle or pay retail!!!
