Re: Lift off...
LOL...I can relate. I hate when someone asks me to spot them on bench. Totally interrupts my workout, but I usually am polite and say "sure no problem", but I think people who want to bench heavy need to do it with a training partner instead of interrupting people, if not, Use dumbbells so you dont need a spotter.

Re: Lift off...
I get what your saying but I like seeing people do what they thought they couldn't. When I'm asked to give a lift off I ask "how many you tryin to get, you want help or just guidance.". Then when they get the 4 or 6 reps they wanted, i tell them "ok man 2 more, it's all you,etc...". Seeing them get those 2 xtra is worth it man.

Re: Lift off...
I do 315 for 10 but I always ask for a lift at that weight. Even sometimes when I feel lazy i'll ask for a lift at 275 .Ive had both shoukders done surgicly and the left one 2x . Plus my ortho years agao told me to bring in my width of my arms when I bench. So actually MY BENCH IS A CLOSE GRIP TRICEP PRESS because I keep my hands in close.Disclaimer: Steroid use is illegal in a vast number of countries around the world. This is not without reason. Re: Lift off...
all depends on how the bench i'm using is set up.a good solid bench should have the j-hooks,i guess you'd call them that-with just enough lip to keep the bar from rolling off.some set ups make them so large you need to push up,hold then pull out to get set.or if it's an adjustable bench that converts to incline the rack is set too far back when the seat back is in incline position.the one at my main gym is like that.even with a warm up wght of 135 i need someone to at least get the bar off the hooks cause i have to actually push backwards at an angle just to get the bar off.
i'll only ask for a spot for my rep count when i know my shoulder's acting up or i'm going up in wght or reps.i train alone and alot of people have no clue how to spot so that's another reason i like to use dumbells alot..."Who me? I agree with this. It seems like the equipment at my gym requires a little more effort to get the bar in position to do reps. Especially the incline. I usually never ask for a liftoff unless I am trying to hit a PR or something.
My old lifting partner would have to have one as well. If in a position to get the bar himself, he would end up bumping the rack at some point during the set.
I get what you are saying though. I think you can tell by the person whether or not the lift off is legitimate, or if the weight is just too much for the person to begin with."He woke up because I kept punching him in the face." --Thiago Alves

Re: Lift off...
I prob sound like a dick, but often I am literally in a trance like state in the gym. Im in like a meditation.I have headphones on and a baseball hat pulled down over my eyes. If I could have my way, I wouldnt have to talk to ANYONE during my workout. LOL...Hope I dont sound like a cranky bastard..LOL...Maybe if I was into doing barbell bench I would think different, but honestly, I cant think of one single thing I do in the gym, where I need a spotter. I used to bench inside a power rack with the safety bars set at about chest level, so if I fail on the last rep, I can lay the bar down and crawl out from under it. One time, I was training alone in my own gym and forgot and left the safety rack too low and failed on the last rep with 315. That freakin bar was on my chest and I couldnt get it off me, so I twisted just enough so the hub of the barbell caught the safety rack enough that I could crawl out. I couldnt freakin breathe. Damn close call. You hear stories of people getting killed by benching aLONE at home, I can see how it could happen.

Re: Lift off...
not a good way to go...lol.once in a while i like to do flat benches to the neck with as wide a grip as possible.with that you have to go light AND have someone at least watching you.a crushed trachea doesn't sit well in a cast,lol...!"Who me? Re: Lift off...
to be honest ot be in proper form you need to have a lift off. there is no way one can hold proper form and lift a bar off that is 6 inches behind there head. i agree if you have no business lifting the weight you shoudln't be doing it however i use 460 as a working set and there is no way in hell your going to catch me not using a spot and not getting a lift off. to keep a good arch with your scap rolled in and back and elbows tucked you just can't lift the bar off yourself.
