  • Too much goin' on?

    Hey Peeps,

Just looking for opinions...my main goal is to get down to around 180 lbs. Right now I'm at 217, started at 240. Back in October I got my diet straight, and have done most of the weight loss just through dieting. About a month and a half ago I started lifting with a buddy of mine who is a trainer, and I also joined a gym by where I work so I can run over during my down time and do cardio. Anywho, here is my question: I think I might be asking too much by doing the lifting and the cardio...I'd love to be a big hulking figure, but I realize the muscle will be a moot point if it's buried under fat. So, am I wasting my time lifting for now, and should I try and devote that time more towards cardio?

    Thanks,

    -BG

IMO, i think you should continue with weight training and cardio. By doing so, i beleive you will see a greater transformation by increasing muscle mass while at the same time shredding excess body fat. This is as opposed to shredding alone and then later on building the mass. Of course a well balanced diet of quality protiens and carbs is essential as well.

well, your main goal is to loose the fat first and foremost, correct? All you have to do is set your goals. 1st, loose the flab. It's easier to burn when you're focussed on one thing at a time. We're not talking about someone at 10%bf that's wanting to get that down some points and see striations better. You're working on dropping 60lbs, I'm not guessing you're 6'10" with a big frame. so, you're wanting to shed the fat. Let's focus on that first. You can burn it up. The first half is the easiest, and you're about half way there. Keep killing it in the gym, and every time you can, with the cardio, and so on. and-so-on does involve weights. You're just useing them different than when you're building muscle. You want to keep a high rep, fast sets, sweat your ass off, go til it burns and then you're doing something, training regimen. The last 10lbs will be the toughest, but if you stay focussed on the goal, you'll be there in a few months. And you'll see a toned body once you get there. Then, you can regroup. Adjust your diet and training, and attack your new goals.
You might be "carb-sensitive". There's allot you'll want to go over.
      What are your stats?
age, height?...and have you always had a battle with being over-weight?
Also, what's your diet look like now. What's your "fat-burning diet" and how often are you eating? Total cals/day?..How long are you doing cardio, and are you incorporating weights into your workout now to burn fat?

Pumping iron is always your primary focus..the more muscle you gain, the more fat you burn. You turn your body into a fat burning furnace....Cardio is always a supplement to the strength training...either after you lift or at a different time of day...Try mixing up your cardio...do some 1 minute rounds on aheavy bag, run some hills, sprints etc..HIIT type stuff...very short bursts of very high intensity cardio...and a bit of long duration lower intensity once in a while, but not all the time. Also, keep in mind that lifting weights is very good for the heart.... a few years ago, I got down to 5% BF with almost no cardio at all... twice a day I hit the gym..my diet was totally strict...the real battle is keeping that diet totally clean. Good luck bro

          Re: Too much goin' on?

Thanks for the info so far, peeps! I wanted to get my facts together and get a b/f recording so I can agin post. Anywho, here is my info:

          Age: 44

          Height: 5'8

          Weight: 214

          B/F: 22.6

Diet: I work 3 jobs, so I'm on the go alot. But I try and put something down every couple of hours. I do a lot of protein shakes and bars, fruit [LOVE bananas! ], and when I eat "real" meals I do baked chicken, steak, pork, roast beef, etc. Plain baked potatoes, green beans, green salads w/ balsamic ving, no cake, sweets, booze, fast food, etc. I look to put down 1500-2000 cals a day. Trying to do around 300g of Protein, am "playing" with carbs, as I'm kinda scared of 'em. lol Only "vice" is a couple of diet sodas daily. I try and drink a ton of water, but sometimes fall short during my home time.

Work out routine: Lift with a buddy of mine who is a trainer, 3X a week. I let him handle the routine, since he's the pro. We usually end our session w/ a 5 mile stationary bike ride. I also have a gym membership at a gym by my "main" job, and with the downtime I get there I can usually get cardio in 3or 4X a week.

Suppliments: I take creatine, fish oil, CLA, ALA, ZMA, Sesimine, a multi vitamin, L-Arginine, and since I have low test I'm on Androgel. I've also played around with some "test boosters" like Tribulus, Long Kat, and other formulations from suppliment companies, but found they aren't working for me. I'm sorry to say I'm kinda still a sucker for the supps that are advertised in "muscle mags." I just had some blood work done to see where my test levels are at, and will see if any changes need to be made in that respect. I will admit I don't have much of a libido even with my weight loss, working out, and Androgel use, so I'm thinking my test might need some boosting through other means. I've also experimented with fat burners, but haven't really found any that have made a difference. I tried Clen, but got the shakes so bad I stopped, and have been leery of trying it again. Plus I heard conflicting reports about what to expect since I'm still so overweight, so I just put it on the shelf for now, and maybe forever...

Try to keep your calories around 2000. You shouldn't go any lower or it will slow your metabolism down. Other than that you are on the right track. Keep in mind that the weight loss will be slow and steady. You should definitely have your test levels checked out. If they are low, your dr can give you hrt.

You can eat clean and still gain muscle. There really no reason for "bulking" diets especially at our age. It's too hard to loss the fat. Keep your cardio intensity high and you'll do just fine.

E and I don't do "bulking" diets any more. We do stay on a sorta-pre-contest diet year round. It just allows us to have a re-feed every so often. I find that if you train in 12 week cycles it helps. Every 12 weeks change things up... diet, lifting routine or cardio.

Thx for the insight, DC. I am facinated with all the aspects of this lifestyle, and it is cool to hear from "real" people. I guess it boils down to that I'm just an average Joe who wants to get into decent shape so I can roll into my 50s with less groans and grunts! lol
