Daved brother I feel your pain because I have had similar situations. I have had 2 back sugeries, one of them 7 weeks ago, and of course lose all strength and mass as a result. Additionally, I travel overseas for deployments a lot which causes my training and diet routine to get off track during transit and getting settled in to a new environment. I can tell you what seems to work best for me, and this is steroid free by the way.

First of all and most important, keep a positive attitude. I understand this can be difficult when losing gains but it is imperative to maintain a positive mental attitude. Additionally, if you're feeling pain it is your body trying to tell you to slow down. Give yourself some rest, perhaps take a couple weeks off or at least reduce your workouts to things that do not hurt such as light weight when working with weights and utilize the machines more; also, dips, pull ups, and push ups are good. After a couple weeks of rest and light lifting try going back to your regular routine but avoid any exercise that inflicts pain. In your case it may mean to lay off shoulder presses and perhaps do some d-bell side raises and maybe the smith machine. Also, if your rotator cuff is injured try doing some one arm cables with very light weight (5 or 10 lbs) for shoulders. Another thing that helps is creating as it makes your muscles retain water which I find aids in support. I also take a Glucosamine Chronditin MSM supplement which helps with joint pain.

I had a shoulder injury which affected me for a year and as a result I never benched more than 225, which has always been a moderate weight for me. You have to avoid inclines and military presses imo when your shoulder is hurt. You don't want to put too much stress on the shoulders.

Just take it easy for a little while and listen to your body. Then, when you feel better ease back into it and set targets to increase the weight. For instance, to get my bench press back up over the summer I aimed for 5 sets of 5 of a weight that I could not get the 5th rep out on the 4th and 5th sets. After a week or two I would hit all 5 sets and then increased the weight by 5 lbs. I'm sure you understand this approach, but first rest and let your body heal.
