  • Bodybuilding???

Okay, don't flame me too much for this post but I am trying to learn as much as I can by reading and what not. I have worked out quite a bit when I was younger, but I was just pushing weight and never looked at caloric intake or diet...I didn't really think that much about my workouts. It has been a while since I have worked out any. I have started the P90x but I think I need to get a little better base before I would see really good results from that. I am now 30 years old and I have gotten way out of shape and I am tired of it. So now I am on the road to understanding my diet, the correct way to weight train, etc...What would be the correct steps to take to get into bodybuilding? I am not looking at getting deep enough into it to compete or anything, I just want to get into it for myself and to get in better shape.

Here are my stats just FYI...5'8", 180-185lbs, ?BF%(I used calipers in the P90X thing, and if I was doing it corretly, it was around 20%...does that sound right?). My work is not that active, but I play alot of golf. I try to be outside as much as I can around the house. Any suggestions other than read and figure it out, because I have been reading and will continue to do so, but you guys know what works and what doesn't. My hardest problem has always been figuring out what to eat on a budget. The P90X program helped out a little in that area.

I assume that to get a better look I would need to diet and lose my fat and then start on the weight training portion more heavily, is that correct? If I have this completely off just shoot it to me straight...it won't hurt my feelings at all. I just want to understand the how's, when's, and why's. So if anyone wants to take me under their wing and show me the way....I am ready!!!

    Re: Bodybuilding???

Well first off stop weighing your self no scales imo.20% is to high.theres a ton of nutritionists out there that can help but so can we here on FG.for training or bodybuilding you need the right amout of proteins and carbs and you need some fat.start reading labels on foods and use this site for counting calories and such its great to use http://www.fitday.com/. and start gong through old articles here in the forums theres great ones to use and help.also there is no such thing as a diet to me its all healthy eating man.Everyone can do it as long as they follow a plan.you can pm iron addict or go to his site he can put a health eating regimen for you and even can do a training stuff on what to use and work out. now just ask theres never a dumb question

      Re: Bodybuilding???

I have been doing alot of reading. I have actually used fitday in the past and I have actually used Iron Addict and used their new software for a month. It seems that every time that someone puts a healthy eating plan (I like that better) together for me, it is way more food that I can eat and gets very costly. I have tried to start reading labels as my gf has really gotten into working out also.

I agree that the 20% is way too high...that is why I am tired of sitting around and not doing anything about it. I think I have a high metabolism because I eat kind of crappy and don't really gain weight. I stay around 180-185lbs no matter what I eat.

Here is an example of what I have been trying to do lately...tell me what you guys think. I didn't really eat specific amounts at the time, I was just trying to get into eating right. Am I getting close?

6:30am--egg whites, turkey bacon, oatmeal, cheese, oj

9:30am--two rice cakes with natural PB on them.

12:00--Subway turkey, chicken breast, ham, etc...

      3:00pm--protein bar and sting cheese

6:00--chicken breast, steak, any lean meat, veggies, etc...

8:00--protein shake (at the time P90x recovery shake)

        Re: Bodybuilding???

What about weight lifting? Should I hit the cardio hard at first to lose the weight? I know that building muscles results in burning fat, but what would be the correct approach? Sorry for all of the newb questions, but I want to make sure I do this right. I realize from alot of my reading that I went about this the wrong way when I was younger and that is why I didn't see the results that I thought I should have.

I do eat potatoes, mainly sweet potatoes and i eat rice cakes. I love brown rice as well. But yeah, any diet help would be amazing. I know that my diet will be the thing to really get me results. I am just no good at this part of it...

The bad part is that I am calling myself a newbie at 30 years old. You would think that I would have figured it out by now. I mean, I always knew that diet was very important...I just never took the time to learn about it. Now I want to.

Right. I like the smaller bodybuilding look. I'm not looking to get too big. Gear may be used eventually once I have got my diet straight and understand what I am doing a little better. I would like to use gear once I get a pretty good luck but nothing right now. I agree 100% about taking it slow! I want to take it slow and I want to do it right. I have talked with IA before and even used their new software, but it just seems like the diet that he gives or that the software gives requires me to eat much more than I can eat, not to mention that it gets really expensive. I want to get it done the right way but at the same time I want to learn the reasons as to why I am eating certain things at certain times, etc....I am not really looking to have someone say, "here eat this"..I want to know why so I can choose what I eat on my budget. I know that is up to me to read and that is what I am going to do. Please keep the suggestions coming....I want to hear all of your experienced opinions.

The diet that I referred to earlier is the one out of the P90x program that I was using. It was supposed to be the fat shredder diet. I need to get a better workout base before I will see good results from that program. High rep is what I was thinking as I am not looking to really bulk up right now. As far as alcohol, I hardly ever drink anymore. So that will be no problem. I will really have to work to drink the water. I can do it, but I almost have to make myself drink it. Thanks man.
