    Re: Flat BB Benching

Depends. I know folks in my gym that are in their mid 60's older guys who still come 5x a week and do all the manly workouts that we younger guys do. Their shoulders seem to be alright and active so who knows. It also matters that you properly heal all the muscles, and if you had any major injuries...once you get injured you'll never be the same.

I've used flat bench my entire "career" as a staple for chest and never had a problem. But I never force more weight than I can handle, use a wider grip - but not silly wide, and always control the bar. I touch off as you do but its slow and deliberate.

Does your shoulder ALWAYS hurt when you bench, even at light weights or is there a threshold at which the pain begins?
Lately yes. Yesterday I warmed up with 95 lbs and I could feel slight pain. It is not enough to stop activity but enough to know I'm doing something wrong. I also feel it when I do weighted dips.

I've never had any injury to my shoulder and I do flat BB heavy once every other week.

First of all, as crazy as it sounds STOP DOING THOSE, lol. Seriously though. You need to heal man. Your shoulder is telling you that something isnt right. Taking it easy for a while now may prevent having to take it easy FOREVER later on. Find those exercises that cause little to no discomfort and stick with those. Heck, take the time to beat the snot out of your legs for a while.

Its ultimately your call but i'd say avoid dips, flat bench, and anything else that causes pain for a few weeks and see how you feel.
