I think that it is also important to use them when you are on a cycle, only b/c when you are cycling you muscles tend to grow a lot quicker and the joints dont have time to catch up so its important to have the extra support during the heavy sets while on to avoid injury. If I am doing exercise that have in the past caused pain I tend to put them on for the heavy set regardless to avoid injury.
I think you are thinking about the tendons my brother. The muscle will get stronger much faster than the tendons can keep up. This is what happened to my Achilles back in September. I was doing 900 lbs on calf extensions and my calves became way to strong for the tendons. So, when I was playing football one weekend I pushed off real hard on my right foot and the strength of my calf along with the fact I weighed 248 tore my achilles.
IMO, the joint should be ok unless you are a PWer. Really heavy 1-3 rep sets put more stress on the joints. But, if you are in the 8-12 rep range then there shouldn't be any issues with your joints, unless you have issues already. Even people who get rotator injuries, it's not so much the weight they lift but the fact that the rotators have poor endurance and can't hold the shoulder joint in place long enough to finish the set. So, when you are doing some 225 incline presses and your rotator gives out about rep 5 then the ball actually gets pressed into the socket from the weight and causes injury to the shoulder joint. But, the whole thing could have been avoided with rotator work. If you train your rotators with high reps 3 times a week they will have the endurance to hold the joint in place to avoid injury. People think it's a shoulder problem, but it's actually a tendon problem.
I used to have superhuman powers....until my therapist took them away.
^i thought it was both that just dont have time to catch up when you on so that is usually when you have problems and injuries that is when the wraps come in hand...
