I'm trying to get a general idea of how your lifts differ. Reason being that my close grip press is consitently 20lbs heavier than my bench. IMO there is something wrong with that. In theory it means that when i bench i'm not engaging my chest correctly, right? I'm not utilizing the muscle like i should???
Could you guys post your lifts for both so i can get an idea of what normal people do?
yeah, sounds like you're not engaging the chest and using mostly your tri's on the push. where is the bar when you bring the bar down, at nipple or below nipple? I feel that if I go nipple or above, i hit more shoulder and tri, than when I go below nipple. this is on straight bench. i dont do close grip bench very often, feels uncomfortable on my wrist.
Stopped benching a while back due to shoulder problems, however, my bench was always stronger than my close grip. When I was benching my bench was 385 and my close grip was around 335. You're just phucking strange...LOL

BRO... I'VE GOT THE SAME PROB. I'VE BEEN JACKING AROUND WITH GRIP WIDTH'S WHILE BENCHING TO FIGURE IT OUT, AND I BELIEVE FIT HAS A POINT ABOUT HOW HIGH (OR LOW) ON THE CHEST THE BAR COMES DOWN....I SEEM TO FEEL IT IN MY SHOULDERS AND TRI'S MORE, AND WHEN DOING CGBP'S I CAN LIFT MORE WEIGHT.
HE WHO MAKES A BEAST OF HIMSELF, GET'S RID OF THE PAIN OF BEING A MAN!!

I drop it below the nipple to the lower chest on both. On bench the inside of my elbows are turned in...on cose grip i rotate them and they face towards my head...totally different mechanics..
bob cicherillo talked about this on the video he made when training for the masters... when doing bench you should try to role your shoulders back not enough that you back arches to much but just enough that the bar stay in your line of site...try it with dumbell bench just see if you can get feel for it

bro to me it sounds liek you are actually going to wide with your grip. IM 6'2" and i only got to pinky finger right inside the ring. try this with the bar unloaded pic the bar up and lower it to your chest. whereever you lower it to is up to you nipple below upper thats a comfort thing but now try this move your hand placement in so that at the very bottom of the lift your forarms are perpindicular to the floor(straigh up and down) since i made this change my bench has gone up a good amount. Im not the strongest but im in the mid 500's for bench and this helped me get there for sure. try it out and let me knwo how it goes

Sounds good.I'm 6'3" so the travel should be somewhat similar for the two of us. The way you describe the lift is exactly how i do my close grips. That said, wouldn't bringing my grip closer involve more tri's than chest? or is it a minimal amount that should be considered insignificant?
I'll try pinky on the ring and see whats up....thats a good 4" move on my hand
same here my lifts are heavier with close grips, so much that i never want to do wide grips even though i should. im only 5'7" and my close grip is pinky on the ring.
Do you bring your elbows down close to your body, or do you bring them straight out perpindicular to your body? Bringing the elbows in close will put much more emphasis on the tris, bringing them straight out puts more emphasis on the pecs. Also, a slightly wider grip will put more on the pecs too, but it sounds like you are already doing that. My close grip is substantially less than my bench. I'm talking about 90 pounds less, give or take. If your close grip is higher than your bench then you have some damn strong tris. I would concentrate on bringing the elbows straight out on bench. It will probably cause you to drop poundage but you will make that back up in no time.
I used to have superhuman powers....until my therapist took them away.
i think that move would be great and for close grip i think you really need to go close and like others have said drop your elbows rigth by your side. whenever i do close grip i actually go half on the smooth and haf on the knarled part of the bar if that makes sense
