I choose deads And that is all I do and my traps aren't the biggest, but they def aren't behind at all. Kinda ahead most of the rest of my body.
Yeah, deads have helped a lot on my upper back too. One thing I found that really blasted my traps was a deadlift/row machine superset. Man, I did that for a couple months and my traps, especially the mid trap, was sore every time. I might have to start doing that again. It's funy how we find soemthign that works and then veer away from it to do something new and forget to go back to it.
I used to have superhuman powers....until my therapist took them away.
BOTTOM LINE - For big traps do shrugs with super heavy weight for 8 - 10 reps.
You don't need a bunch of other fancy movements or special techniques. Traps are a relatively small muscle with a short range of motion. They respond well to heavy weights. That is what has worked for me. Now I'm up to 950lbs for 6 reps.

I've always liked shrugs, with a deep stretch at the bottom.

I love the heavy shrugs but I just got to be careful about rolling my shoulders at the top cause I tore my rotator cuff about 7 years ago and then had it repaired.

Yep...ya gots to be very careful with that. I have a bad habit of doing that, too. It feels really good to get that stretch in when you roll you shoulders back with the light weight for your warm ups. Then I forget sometimes and get the deep stretch goin on tha heavy weights...and have to catch myself from doing it. Rotator cuffs will knock ya out the gym in a 'heart-beat'
