  • Aspiration.

Aspiration is a must so i do it every injection. Most of the time i pull back on the plunger for about 2-4 secs and nothing happens and it doesn't pull back, and i proceed with the injection.I use 1" needle. Today, however, i was doing a quad shot and aspirated, as soon as i pulled on the plunger it went back with ease and empty air bubbles poured into the syringe, no blood, just air. and my quad felt like someone vacuumed it and hurt a little. Seeing no blood though, i went ahead and injected and am heating the site now just in case.
I would just like to know if empty air bubble coming into the syringe is something to worry about.

    Thanks.

well hardly anyone really pulls back anymore to check for blood we all just stick it. But you dont evr want to inject a air bubble into a vein not that it will happen but i'm sure it could, anything is possible. Dude ust stick it in and shoot. You onyl have to pull back a tiny tiny bit not like a half a cc worths or anything like that or 4 seconds way to much time. Dude just stick it in and shoot have no worries. If theres blood well it happens to all of us after injection.Even nurses that have giving me shots dont pull back. Ive seen some that do and some that dont

        Re: Aspiration.

Everything I have read it would have to be a significant amount of air to cause a problem. I mean if you ever see those Iv's a the hospital there is quite a bit of air that is injected directly into the vein.

Do you think the needle might not have been screwed on very tight? I've had that happen to me.

Like I posted at M-F on this. Your blood pressure runs around 75-80lbs of pressure- you will know if you try to push a stopper against that much pressure. The main thing that you gotta watch is hitting a nerve- thats freaky the first time

Ive never hit a nerve but when you get scar tissue it does get rough in there and slow when you push.

May sure the needle has juice, not air, inside. Before injecting, push the plunger until you see a drop at the end of the needle. Also, it's a gentle pull on the plunger. Sometimes I may have a very tiny air bubble in the shot, when aspirating the buble "grows" but shrinks back down when pushing.
I must be old school or anal retentive, I still aspirate.
I got a flu shot a few weeks back, the nurse quickly aspirated the shot. Looked like out of habit, she was not even looking. She was talking to a person to her side when her thumb flipped to the back of the plunger and quickly flipped back. Looked like she had done it a million times and could give a shot in her sleep.

                  Best of Luck,

i don't bother either. however once you pull the pin it will bleed if you hit a vein. Done the same as MM above and vomited. that is not fun.

i aspirate.... and every time i pull back i get little air bubbles in the oil then they just go away when ever i stop pulling on the plunger... its not a bid deal.... 1 cc of air intravenously will kill you.... 10 ccs of air intramuscular. Thats what was taught in my EMT/ Paramedic class.
