  • Anti anxiety drugs linked to Alzheimer's in elderl

Alzheimer’s occurs more often among older people who have used benzodiazepines for long periods, researchers report.

This is why I hate benzos in elderly. (Besides increased fall risk and delerium) I hate inherting these patients from other doctors and I have to play the bad guy getting them off. Don't get me wrong there are clear neurological conditions that warrant these medications such as Klonipin etc. (myoclonus, dystonia and chorea not controlled by alternate drugs). I have also found by getting the drug screens on 100% of my patients whom I prescribe schedule II -IV drugs , that som of these elderly aren't even taking their meds since their family members are diverting them ( I use the accurate $300 gas chromatography drug screens, not the crappy $25 ELISA which has too many false postives and false negatives).....
